In-Game Private Messages

With the servers down, the tribunal empty, and LCS on in my second monitor I have nothing better to do than start a discussion about in-game private messages.

In particular, I want to better understand the pros and cons to enabling private messages. Right now in game you have the ability to:

  1. Speak to everyone on your team.

  2. Speak to everyone in the game.

This ends up being very limiting when you are trying to calm a toxic team down.

Imagine a situation where Teemo is being very toxic, specifically towards DrMundo . The best possible outcome would be for DrMundo to ignore Teemo , but instead, he is taking the bait and getting upset. You want him to know that you empathize and provide moral support, and in many cases this would be enough to calm him down and stop the escalating situation, but doing this in a way that Teemo can hear you would probably make matters even worse.

You can't PM anyone you aren't friends with, which means there are far fewer things you can do or say to diffuse the situation. I'm wondering what reason there is to disallowing that functionality?

Alternatively, the ability to make "mute" bi-directional would be quite helpful (i.e. if I ignore someone, they cannot see what I say either.)

I don't think private messages appear in the chat logs sent to the Tribunal. That being the case, it would also open a door for players to flame without the risk of having a case sent to the Tribunal since there would be no hard evidence that it took place for someone viewing the chat logs. As far as the Tribunal knows, the player could just make up something to get someone in trouble. Enabling the view of private messages to the tribunal would obviously pose as an invasion of privacy as personal information may be mixed into the contents, and I don't think that's something you can do on a case-by-case basis.
