Popping in here.
Honestly, that's a pretty reasonable strategy. Especially if negativity can put you on tilt, it's probably the best strategy. But it has one problem, this:
" Picking something. Then muting the whole team once ingame. If you want to communicate, use pings. "
While you've got all the right content in there, this attitude comes across to me as negative, because it's pretty passive-aggressive (it implies that they're probably negative people), and that just sets the tone for negativity later in the game. Even if you don't experience it, it still has a negative impact on the other players in your game. Compare the above to something like this:
"Hey guys, negative chat in-game really bothers me and puts me on tilt. I'm not worried about you guys, I just don't want to take any chances, so I'm going to mute you all and concentrate on the game; I'll still use pings to communicate, and I hope will, too."
Things I did differently:
- Gave a reason for muting them that's about me.
- it's not accusatory
- Specifically, I let people know that I'm not worried about them
- People understand that you're doing it to play better
- (As opposed to simply refusing to communicate)
- Makes it clear that I still intend to communicate
I think starting the game on the right foot is really important, so why risk starting it on the wrong foot by typing something that might be inflammatory? Here's the big thing: it doesn't matter whether you actually believe that they might be a problem or not. All that matters is that they don't think you're accusing them of anything, and over the internet they can't tell that you don't believe it).
