Need help from a developer's perspective.

Hello, I'm Elementaris. Currently, I play on an indie game, and the PvP for such a small game is really amazing! This game is unique because players have direct contact with the developers in-game. I try to come up with new ideas and refreshing changes to my favorite classes and weapons, but the lead devs never really seem to like my ideas. I was just wondering what you guys do with your ideas, because it's frustrating to see my ideas shot down so easily after I've spent quite a large sum of time pondering them.

What do you guys do before you create an idea? How do you make sure the idea is thematic and not over-the-top? What makes my ideas so bad? Do you have any advice for someone like me?

I know this is pretty vague, but I think posting the game is advertising which is illegal here. (I think?)

Thank you for your time.

  1. Does it create desirable gameplay for both the user and the receiver? (Fun)
  2. Does it have options for the receiving end user? (Counterplay)
  3. Does it overshadow other optionional routes? (Is one style overpowered)

It's not only the user that has to enjoy the gameplay, keep that in mind.

As a programmer in general, I know I'm more likely to get hooked on an idea rather than a specific implementation. For example:

I think this game really needs a flaming sword, complete with whooshing sound effects.

Is more likely to get me thinking than

I think this game needs 'Cherubic Steel', a flaming sword that gives flight, has +67 attack damage, and leaves enemies burning, taking 30 damage per second for 6.1 seconds and can effect people nearby with...

Look for things that are lacking in general and let the developers do the developing.
