Idea to combat toxic players DURING GAMES

I believe there should be an option to call for a vote to chat restrict a toxic player on your team. Yeah, there is a mute option, but before anyone goes on to mention this, let me make it clear that that's not the point of this thread. I believe chat restrictions would be better, but of course it would require the verdict of multiple players. This would enable players in every game to decide what behavior is/isn't acceptable, IN EVERY GAME.

Lets face it, for the most part the majority of players don't use the mute option. I know I don't ( at least with teammates). Why don't I? I don't know how to put it, it just isn't my thing to completely put a teammate in the dark and potentially miss out on anything useful he/she may actually say (X bush is warded, ganking X lane after red, etc). Besides, me muting a toxic player doesn't solve anything. The player will continue to be toxic and all I could do is maybe say something to get them to chill out, well, before I mute them anyway. That usually doesn't go to well, I'll just get more toxicity out of them like "stfu noob" "stfu you're 0/2" "I'm not ganking your lane" "stfu or ima afk"...ya get the point right? Otherwise just play out the rest of game and report them afterwards, which by then doesn't mean much because for all I know my report wont do anything and I'll probably never play with that player again. The time I did spend playing with a toxic player matters way more, and the only way I can combat it is by muting them, which brings me back to my previous point.

So my idea is, why not give players the power to rule out unacceptable behavior, during an actual game, during the time that it matters when you are stuck with a toxic player for 20+ minutes. When you actually get to feel the impact of a toxic player getting punished during the time that matters most - when you are playing league of legends - because it's that time where we actually experience player toxicity. And of course the impact would be felt by the toxic player at hand as well, when he/she realizes that the rest of their teammates do not appreciate their behavior. This should help players that tend to be toxic to improve their behavior over time. Where as the report system, when a toxic player actually does get punished by it, by then they have most likely moved on from the games where they were being toxic

So unlike the report system, when they feel the punishment in real time, it would help them understand what it is that others do not like about their behavior. Its like sitting down to play a champion you haven't played before that is really frustrating to play against, and only then you start to see what it is that that champion does and ways you could counter it. A toxic player that has been chat restricted during a game because his/her teammates voted on it, would allow them to see during that game what he/she has done do deserve the punishment and ways he/she could improve. Being chat restricted would nevertheless allow the player to moderate their behavior for the rest of the game and use the chat to contribute to winning the game or at least to say something nice. If they choose not to you wont even have to mute them, because for the most part they would just end up muting themselves after using up their available number of messages.

In the end, it's only a win-win for the players victim of toxicity and ultimately doesn't rule out a toxic players say in the game by allowing them to redeem their bad behavior by using their chat in good manner. ** Ideas to how this would work.**

  • First off, a chat restriction vote cannot be called until 10 minutes into the game. During the early game is when toxicity tends to break out and goes on afterwards to ruin the rest of the game. 10 minutes should be enough time to decide if a player is worthy of a chat restrict vote call. I say 10 minutes because a vote shouldn't be called 3 minutes into the game when say, that first gank goes horribly wrong and a few of your teammates have little verbal fight.

  • Like a FF vote, if a chat restrict vote fails some time has to pass before one could be called again.

  • After 3 failed attempts to chat restrict a player, a chat restrict call on that player cannot be made again for the rest of the game. This is to prevent a player from continually calling a chat restrict vote on another player for something that really isn't chat restrict worthy, like being mad at someone over a "KS".

  • Only 1 player on each side/team could get chat restricted for the game. This is for one thing, to prevent this system from being abused, but mostly based on the saying "there's always that one toxic player on my team" which is kinda true. So if there is that one toxic player on your team, you and your other teammates should be able to determine it and get them chat restricted.

Two ways this system could be implemented:

1: A unanimous vote: 4 players must vote yes against the toxic player. This would enable a full chat restrict like the way it works from being reported. I believe it starts with 3/5 messages and increases by 1 every 5 minutes, accruing up to 5 messages.

2: A split vote: at least 2 players must vote yes. The more amount of players that vote yes, the harsher the punishment. So 2 votes could be something like a temporary chat restriction, say 5 total allowed messages for the next 15 minutes, starting at 3/5 increasing by 1 every 5 minutes. The chat restriction would be completely lifted after the 15 minutes pass. And 3 votes could be a 25 minute chat restriction with 7 total allowed message in that time period, again starting at 3/5 increasing by 1 every 5 minutes and the chat restriction being lifted after 25 minutes. 4 votes would of course be the same as point #1 except the chat restriction lasts all game.

Well anyway, what do you guys think about this? and if you think you have better ideas please post them :) thanks for reading

Nope, that makes no sense. Why implement a whole new feature when muting already exists and is more effective? Not using the mute feature is not only stupid and opposite of what you want to accomplish, it is also against Riot's intentions.

Here's why I think your ideas are dumb as fuck. #Premade
