For all you people who are comparing LoL to overwatch.

Let me just say this in advance, overwatch is an amazing game. I have just as much fun with it as I do with league.

But the reason why you are so desperate to bash league and praise overwatch is probably because you are the type of player to go 5/0 in lane then lose because you dont know what towers are. Makes sense that an FPS would suit your needs.

But stop. You are comparing apples to fucking rocketships.

  • League is a MOBA. ---- Overwatch is an FPS.
  • League has RPG elements. --- Overwatch is an FPS.
  • League is third person. --- Overwatch is an FPS.

Just because Overwatch follows the convention of having champions much like League's champions, doesn't mean the two games are even remotely similar. League is a moba. Overwatch is an FPS. Please stop comparing them, it's pointless.

I think of Overwatch as a cartoony Warframe. [slayer-jinx-wink]

I hate FPS type games. Being that Overwatch was made by Blizzard, I hate that one even more and will never even check it out. But yes, totally different genres that people don't seem to get.

Actually, there are a lot of comparisons to make and that's not a bad thing actually. The main part that makes the comparisons so obvious is that they follow very similar team dynamics and game strategy. Just because they're a different game type which seems to be your main argument, doesn't mean they cannot be compared together. And that's ok. There's nothing wrong with similarities.

To be honest, the best way to look at the two games is to compare both to soccer and hockey. Especially since league is slower paced and longer games while overwatch is shorter and generally more chaotic.

Both games use very similar team make ups: (sportswise: centers, forwards, defense, goalie, wings) (gamewise: supports, marksman, tanks, utility, burst carries, sustain carries, etc). Both games tend to play out very similarly because of this, with the healers keeping the tanks and damage dealers alive, while the utility throw down as much cc and buffs as possible. Characters are very similiar. One very obvious example being sona and luicio: healer/buffers that do so through music. Did overwatch rip league off? No. Both used the character archtype of the bard which has existed for 30+ years which is itself based on myth and folklore. Echo and Tracer? The time jumping character archtype has been used in anime for decades as well. Keeping in mind that even if overwatch did base some concepts on league there's no actual foul there. All creative work is based on the work that came before it. It's not theft, it's influence.

Generally speaking though, don't fight the comparisons, embrace them. Where the games are similiar are ways to bridge gaps between the two fandoms and bring people over to either side. It's a good thing.

Overwatch is not even remotely close to League. Blizzard is just trying to lure some people with false ads. Its just a generic fps with a single game mode - "control objective for 5 minutes" and instead of weapons you switch heroes.. on death. It does have anime inspired style though.

I've played Overwatch, TF2 and Lol, and while yes, Overwatch seems to be a TF2 clone with Moba gimmicks, such as heroes instead of classes, some aspects of the game are a lot closer to LoL than TF2, despite being an FPS.

The existence of abilities and "ults" with long cooldown and big gameplay impact create a teamfight dynamic that is actually very close to a LoL teamfight and unlike anything in TF2, where the closes thing to it is an Ubercharge.

Furthermore Team size is small, meaning most often than not the entire team fights as a whole, kinda like full team figths in LoL, unike TF2, where many classes are off doing their own thing.

Also, with it's numerous "updates" (i'd call them downgrades that further destroy what was once a great game, but i digress) the line between classes and roles has become very blurry so the rock-paper-scissors dynamic in Overwatch is far closer to LoL than the current iteration of TF2.

They are directed at possibly different crowds, since they are completely different genres with different pacing and skills involved, but there really are some similarities in gameplay and style. It's not just a superficial comparison.
