Why does having a character that happens to be lgbti does actually matter
It's not for the love of gays (even though it's a good reason to me :D)
It's because of representation
I know it's confusing for you guys because you get represented absolutely everywhere so you have no idea what it feels like But just so you understand, I'm a transgender teenage (18 in less than 4 months) girl. I don't like saying these because they'll always be random people feeling like debating of the whether i exist or nah, and telling me that they know who i am better than I do (and don't even get me started on all the insults/death threats i received). In any show/series I've watched, any book i read, any game i've played, i haven't seen a transgender teenage girl once. I almost could never relate. I feel like people don't know I exist or just don't care that I do
There's a lack of representation of LGBTI people. Especially in this kind of game. I have no idea if putting a lgbti character will open the mind of like thousands of people, hundreds, a dozen or even just one but I know one thing, it'll help us feeling that we belong to this world. Because sometimes (often), we just don't. I could talk about what's happening in Chechnya to explain myself but a lot of people are reacting to it. The things that happen in Chechnya happen everyday in some countries like uganda, nigeria, saudi arabia (...) and no one actually reacts to it. The murder rate of trans women in brazil is beyond crazy also, and i've never heard someone talk about it (it does not apply only to lgbti people though, it's ridiculous how little i heard about terrorists attacks in africa) So yeah, when I see that we're getting targeted for who we are and most of the times there's never someone to care, I don't feel like i'm welcome here
And to all the people saying the sexuality of a champion doesn't matter cuz riot never mentions champion's sexuality, well it's false
And it was false before
and
, even
has a romantic relationship with some girl in his (old?) lore. I don't want a champ screaming how much of a queer he is, that would basically make me cringe and would not please me (and i'm sure as well it won't please most of the lgbti players).
If I had to give an example of how it could be handled well is
we think about Lucian we don't think about his sexuality. We know that he dated woman but that's not what defines him. That's close to how I would like it to be handled if they ever add a lgbti character. I would still want them to develop that lgbti side a bit.
Why ?
Because it changes the way you see the world. Not because your brain magically changes as soon as you understand you're lgbt, it's because the way you interact with people changes. You start fearing them more, and I don't know if this applies to a lot of us but personally I always think that for some reason everyone seing me knows that i'm transgender and laugh at me because I am. Being transgender in a transphobic society made me paranoiac. So this kind of things could be developed in a very interesting way. Tbh i'll be happy with a lgbti character even if they don't develop the lgbti side. The fact that there's lgbtiphobia on earth does not mean there's lgbtiphobia on runeterra. So perhaps it's not that relevant, idk.
Also even though it's cool that riot starts adding poc as champions, they also suffers from a lack of representation. They're pretty rare, especially when compared to white champs. And white people are not a majority on earth (even if it was,
and maybe
is really low).
I hope this wasn't too boring to read and that i was at least a bit clear
(btw sorry for all the grammar mistakes i've made but for someone who isn't a native english speaker and lives in france I think i did pretty good)
