Incentives to Finish Games/A Thought on Disconnect
First of all, thanks to RIOT for making such a fun game to play. I just wanted to throw out two ideas I've been mulling over:
-
I think there should be a small IP incentive to vote NO on a surrender request. For one thing, we've all been on both sides of a snowballing game, and while it's frustrating to be on the losing side, it's also a shame that you never get to finish when you're doing well (particularly if, like me, you're rarely doing well). Further, I've been in multiple games where players are raging in the moment but come late game we turn the tides and win. I think it's good to stick with the game and practice getting back into it. I realize there are games that people just want to exit, and that's fine. I don't think there should be a penalty for wanting to surrender. But I DO think it would be awesome if I could know that there's a little something in it for me (again, I think a small IP boost would fit the bill) if I vote to stick with the game, and I think such an incentive would encourage most games to be seen through to the end. I hope you'll agree.

I think we've all had games where we disconnect unexpectedly and we know we're not deliberately trolling. I don't know if RIOT has a way to tell the difference between a player voluntarily exiting a game or whether the exit was due to an internet malfunction; but if there's a way to distinguish that I don't think people should be penalized for disconnecting. To me, that's like fining someone for letting their home get burned by a forest fire: obviously they didn't request that or try to make that happen. Lots of us play this game on toasters, but I think that if we're able to log in and get into a game all of us would think we're gonna be able to finish it. Sometimes it doesn't work that way, but it's not deliberate or intentional if someone disconnects (who knows how to predict that). Moreover, when a player does disconnect the remaining players are disadvantaged for that game regardless but afterwards they're able to jump into a different game with other people. They won't notice that the dc'd player got punished (or didn't) and, frankly, after the game is concluded I don't think most people will care whether a player got punished. They're just on to the next game.
In contrast, if there's a person who is deliberately trolling and consistently and voluntarily leaves games or dodges, that person deserves punishment. In that case, it's not just an accident that will work itself out. It's a person who will make the game unenjoyable over and over again. I have no qualms with ensuring that kind of player gets to play fewer games.
So maybe this is all for naught, maybe there is no way to tell the difference between a deliberate troll and someone with faulty connections. But if there's ever a way to distinguish between those two, my vote is to stop punishing people who disconnect.
Thanks for reading my book.
