Playing Ranked and being forced into a role you are bad at...

What to do? well idk... you tell me.

So im just going to say it: I am a terrible ADC and a sub-par Jungler. Lately i have been forced into those two roles quite a bit and most of the time it ends with a loss.

I never cry and whine about getting those two roles though, Why? because i expect my team to pick up my slack! Its the least they could do for forcing me into a role im not comfortable with and unless they want to lose they better do better then they ever have before... Im not saying i purposely feed or fail CS or anything, i just cant do it good.

BTW TO THOSE WHO DO THIS PLEASE STOP SAYING "NOOB JUNG/ADC" BECAUSE YOU KNEW I WASNT GOOD, I TOLD YOU BEFORE EVERYONE CHOSE AND YOU STILL DID IT, so dont cry to me about losing im pissed i lost because i was forced into a losing situation...

I played a game as Cait where my team did everything they could to compensate for my lack of skill at ADC and i got fed and then carried us to victory... it worked because my team took the fact i could not ADC well and played a little better or a little safer, gave me a few kills, peeled better for me, gave me advice throughout the game, and most importantly encouraged me. If you can not do this for your noob teammate then you are the noob. Why didnt you ADC or Jungle? Oh, because you cant? Well join the club pal...

Yes im ranting but thats because im tired of being blamed for losing games when i am forced into roles i am not comfortable with. I have a multitude of Top champs, Mid champs, and Supports and i am quite good at those 3 roles most of the time. Yes i have practiced a lot with jungle and adc but i just cant get the hang of those types of champs and playstyles, the only time i can do good at ADC is if i am talking to the support through skype.

Does that mean you should give up your role? Not necessarily no (i usually give up my lane if someone asks nicely), but at least try and help them and try not to blame them because you could have taken that role and you didnt.

So i just want to say to those who are forced into roles they dont like, try to have at least 1 champ you are comfortable with in that role and if you lose? so what... you knew you werent good at that role, your team knew, so what are they mad about? they are the ones who set it up like that... they could have done those roles but they didnt, why? because they couldn't because they are bad in those roles.

Bring on the downvotes, name calling, and hate comments... amuse me >:D

I can completely understand that frustration. Especially when your team goes in with a more selfish "Well, I'm first pick so I can play whoever I want" type of attitude. What does that do for the team? When last pick is stuck playing jungle and they are the worst jungle NA. Truth told, in a perfect world with perfect people the 4 other teammates could easily fill where we as individual players fall short. The hard truth with ranked though, is you need to know all roles and have at least one champ you can play well in each. If you can even have at least 3 different lanes and a champ for each of those lanes, you probably will rarely run into any issues.

Here's an example:

I LOVE Soraka. For awhile in ranked she was the only champ I ever played and I would only play support.

Here's the problem:

Soraka isn't the best support. I know how to play her really well though...but what happened when that role was filled? I played a terrible top and we lost.

So personally I stopped playing ranked until I went back into teambuilder, tried new champs and learned new roles. You basically encompass a "fill" role.

Is that ideal? No. It would be cool to exceed in ranked playing the roles you love and you're good at. Starting ranked though, ignore the trolls, be flexible and give it everything you have. Ranked comes with good and bad games no matter how good you are. If you're not willing to jump into ranked playing a role you're not comfortable with, go in and try it out in team builder. I've found for myself I enjoy ranked more now because I'm comfortable playing different lanes - also, I've learned to love a TON more champs. ;)

Happy Gaming! :D

Well, draft pick has a set of accepted, albeit community generated, rules to help streamline the picking process, so the first step would be to simply follow it.

Second would be to either ask for your preferred role, state the role you are the least skilled in, or possibly even do both so that your team may work around you. There will always be people who do not pay attention to the pre-game chat, but making sure this information is out there is about all you can do.

Lastly you should practice your weakest roles in normal matches. I'm running into this problem myself, since I almost always try to play top I am weaker in both knowledge and skill when it comes to squishier roles. The best thing you can do is practice.

Yes you mentioned most of what I've said in your post, but let's be frank here. You're going into ranked without the ability to play all roles, it is up to you to make sure you can handle each one in such a way that you won't be a detriment to your team. Should you be good enough to carry? Probably not, but practice to the point where you can get carried easily.

I you're not great at them, then you should go practice getting better at them. That way maybe the team won't fail most of the time. I honestly like to play Support a lot but when I don't get that role, sure I'll take whatever, but I've made sure to be very proficient in all roles so that I don't need to rely on the team to pick up the slack.

Practice the roles in normals and at least get semi-comfortable in them. Going into ranked means you are prepared.

You can always dodge, saving your MMR (LP is ok to lose at lower elos because if your mmr is high/above your visual elo[color you're in] then you'll gain your LP at like 10-30 a game easily moving right back up and beyond..) mmr is what gets you up, not LP. LP is just some useless visual gain to make you feel better MMR is actually what justifies who you're against/how much LP you gain per win/if you skip up a whole division.

Dude you are not wrong. If you're forced to a role then try your best. But I'd say you at least need to practice the roles you're bad at in bots or normals. There will be a lot of times you will not get your desired role and seeing that you should prepare.

I have similar problem. But i am not too often forced to other lanes. Because I am support and that a spot, that little of players want.

Though instead of accepting the fact that you are terrible ADC should not you learn those lanes? Especialy when you are forced into them mote often?

Learning ADC is nothing hard, just learn to creep (you can do that in customs, teambuilder even in TT). If you were able to carry the game if team helped you, then I assume you have no problem with positioning. ADC laning phase is nothing so hard.

But jungle thugh is hard. I would suggest for you to learn one champ like maokai. Something not so skill demanding and nothing too much aggresive.

My advice is just to learn a bit those lanes.

3 words: Ranked Team Builder

Solo/Duo Queue players join up and form a team. One of them is either chosen at random or elected by a system to become the Team Leader. The Team Leader bans 3 champions. - Worst case scenario, is one champion gets banned multiple times (E.g. Jax). I'll say this now, if you try to play Jax, you may have to wait.

Hundreds of lobbies all do the same.

MATCHMAKING TIME!

Matchmaking finds multiple teams of equal skill (etc.) and pits them against other teams that have not banned any of their selected champions.

There's nothing wrong with having only one or two roles you like to play. However, in ranked you'll find that there are several people who aren't as skilled as you at ANY role and it's your job to pick up their slack. Especially in lower tiers, I've found the only way to win ranked is to make sure it happens yourself. I tried to play a little ranked in season 3 and failed because I was only good at a couple positions. After practicing and becoming competent (if not actually pretty good) at all roles, I'm starting to have a much easier time. Teamwork is a major part of winning. There is zero doubt about that. But before you even go into a ranked game, it should be your responsibility to make sure you're prepared.

I genuinely think it's unfair to your teammates if you go into a ranked game, knowing that if you don't get the position you want (which you won't a lot of the time) you'll probably be a contributing factor in a loss. I'm not trying to be disrespectful. I understand that everyone has to start somewhere and practice makes perfect. There's nothing wrong with being in the learning process. But for the sake of other players who are trying really hard to rank up, it makes more sense to practice/continue to play normals until you're ready for ranked games where you'll get forced to play outside your comfort zone.

I'm not excusing toxic behavior. That is never okay regardless of the situation. But not getting a role you want is just part of ranked and you know that going in. So until you're ready to play any role with confidence, it's probably best just to stick to normals.

I've found that if you work to set a positive atmosphere in champ select, people are more willing to work so that everyone can get a role they're good at.

To that effect, the second I enter champ select, I say,

Good [time of day] everybody.

followed by

My prefs are mid > supp > top.

If people still haven't stated their top role or two, or there's a conflict of interest, I'll say something like,

Let's work together so everybody can get a role they're good at; Can you all say your top two prefs? Mine are mid/supp.

Past that, I improvise, but I find the vast majority of the time, saying those things, I'm able to get one of the three roles I'm comfortable playing in ranked.

Worgslarg9/9/2014, 1:15:46 AM2 votes

Every time you get in a ranked game, state that you are terrible at certain roles. Some people may not want to put someone in a role they suck at.

Aside from that, practice your worst roles in normals.

Linna Excel9/9/2014, 7:28:29 PM2 votes

Just play your best and accept you are probably going to lose the game unless you get help/carried.

I don't care what people say, it's unlikely for someone to play at the level of their current rank at all 5 positions. It's not happening. So if whoever is last pick and you force him into his worst role, just shut up you crybabies. You are to blame for putting someone in their weakest role.

1st9/10/2014, 3:23:43 PM2 votes

Honestly, I'd suggest just practicing the roles you're "terrible" or a "noob" at. I can't really relate to the struggle, because of the simple fact I'm surely secured at Jungle unless I'm last pick. What I find helps, is either find a highly viable champ who can do many roles. Chogath and other champs alike can literally go: Top, Mid, Jungle, and Support. This is a main reason why I main LeeSin, because he can go Top, Mid, and Jungle. Add to the fact I main Leona too, so if I'm ever stuck I can use those two.

That's about the only help I can give you brotha, best of luck.

As a jungle main, I have a tip for you - farming until 6 is effective on MOST junglers. Unless your jungler has great pre-6 ganks, what you can do is just farm the jungle and countergank. After that, gank someone whenever your ult is up. Gank whoever is easiest to get to.

Also, don't gank top after 10 minutes or unless you know their jungler isn't in a position to take dragon, as a good jungler who can solo dragon (or just get help with it) will.

Rhyto9/10/2014, 5:07:16 AM2 votes

Yeah, while I can relate to this issue during my early games I've been able to learn most roles except Jungling. However by learning the roles you'll have a chance to not particularly lose the match entirely. Afterwards just focus on at least two roles to master in order to improve your performance with your team. Good Luck buddy.

karmacide9/10/2014, 9:13:48 AM2 votes

I spent most my time as an adc, and I have finally started playing other roles in the team builder. Playing Jungle is an eye opening and educational experiance for sure. Learning all the roles will not only make you more adaptable, it will really make you better at your prefered role as well.

Teenbus9/9/2014, 10:29:22 PM1 votes

I don't understand what people are talking about in this thread. If you're playing ranked, you should have at least basic proficiency in any role.

MAZZ1M09/11/2014, 3:38:48 AM1 votes

tldr, but I think I get the gist of it.

You can't expect your team to pick up your slack. That is the wrong mindset for this game. It's downright horrible actually. Think of it this way, a team isn't strictly good or bad, it's a range the enemy team can target. Your weakest player is your team defense, your strongest player is your team offense. If you want to say your strongest is your tank to be a smartass (not targeting op, just generalizing here,) well, think about it a minute and you'll realize what I just said still holds true.

One player that feeds the wrong champ/player can easily lose the game for the whole team. You need to at least be proficient in all roles. You don't have to excel. I excel in jungling and support. Mid-lane scares me even now, but I'm good enough to snowball with ganks or just hold lane if bullied. Top lane is still a huge question mark for me at the moment. Riven, Fiora, Shyvana, Irelia, Akali, Wukong all have drawbacks or difficulties in use that are a pain-in the-ass to manage and while I'm not afraid of toplane, I never go in thinking "I got this like Leroy Jenkins baby." I'm actually quite good at adc, but the role bores me to tears and I avoid it whenever I can because... yawn! I am good at it though. So here's the thing, I don't like adc, midlane consistency is iffy, and I need more toplane practice, but I don't go into ranked expecting to be carried. If I want to win, I do my best unless I'm totally countered whether in toplane or midlane, to carry my team. Never go in expecting to be carried, go in expecting to carry. If you're not proficient enough to carry at least half your games in every role, you shouldn't play ranked.

I practice what I preach. I've only started playing ranked recently; I started playing back in January. I'm actually a little worried I won't make it to gold in time for season rewards. I won my promo today with two Volibear games. I lost the first game in the next rank because of unplayable CC and I used Voli for that game as well. Tell me, if even your good players are hurting, what are you offering to help them? You need to be able to contribute no-matter the role. I practice all the time because I want to feel confident enough to do that. Top and mid have been most of my teambuilder games for the last month.
