[Open discussion] - Champion IP/RP pricing
This is a stingy topic running into my head for a while, so 3 things:
- This thread is about making champions free/easier to obtain, probably deleting their RP pricing
- This thread is not about begging : i discuss a change of price only if there are valuable reasons
- I am not a part of the Ecommerce team, obviously, so i want to talk reasonable assumptions, while avoiding to be arrogant
LoL has a weird thing: it is a competitive game, yet it has walls for picking all the champions of the game. This strikes really hard while starting the game: the so dreaded new player experience not only has to deal with a mechanically intensive game and an edgy community ( a common trait of mobas ), but has to deal with the fact that there are no champions unlocked since beginning: the player has to unlock themselves, and even if they have an increase in IP gain it can create loads of orientation problems: what to pick from a such big rooster, if save IP, the lack of a starting docking point for playing. The 450 IP champions are mostly time-fodders: you play a bit and pick the one you like. Only that the new player cannot foretell what it would like, since there is not even a trial room before buying. Also these 450 IP champions have a trolly RP price, not everyone is aware of the boundle and makes the player want to flip the table.
So, in order to make the first player experience better, why not make the 450 Ip champions free? By doing so you have probably a better experience while denying a little gain in matter of money and gameplay time.
Plus, an other thing: League is getting more and more stuff to pay for, more skins for every thing and now the first strike initiative that in my opinion is a really cool thing, so by allowing a player to have a starting point of champions new players are immediately more attracted to skins, or to what ever thing you can attach to a champion ( like chromas), that then plays for stuff and repay the cost of the loss of money and time. Probably. I have no numbers for that, probably i am overestimating, but seems pretty much reasonable to me.
This can be extended to 1350 IP champions too, if proves to be very effective ( maybe not immediately free, like making them unlocked for each level up of the account) and if too many champions are given for free and rankeds are made too much accessible then a Champion Rank requirement can be added in order to play a champion,a dding game time for the players and gating the access to rankeds only to those that actually have spent time mastering a pool of champions, increasing the number of somewhat skillful players in rankeds.
In short, there are many levers that can be used in order to manipulate champion unlocking, time spent on game and money. Frankly i would myself appreciate more the time spent on the game if i had to play what i like rather that have to play for what i like, even if i agree the latter might be necessary.
What is your opinion? Can, maybe, a red drop here for some insight? ( i have a scuttle crab as offering).
