About this whole Tencent Owning Rito Issue...

I'm going to quote a shitload of shit so be prepared.

_ What Sesame Credits are _

Basically this system is a gameification of being a good Chinese citizen. That in itself seems harmless, right? Well, if you think the following things are benign, disregard this post.

Mandatory participation by 2020 Real-world penalties for purchasing things unbecoming of a 'good citizen.' Restricted Internet access for low-scorers Penalties for voicing opinions contrary to the Chinese government Penalties for criticism of the Chinese government Rewards for people who conform to the official policies of the Chinese Communist party Rewards for purchasing items indicative of a loyal Communist

_ Why we cannot do anything for it _

I mean... I get your moral outrage, but the truth is riot has no say in any of that, and more than that, has no way of affecting it. China operates differently as a communist country with a very different political leaning. I won't speculate on whether it's good, bad, or ugly here.

I commend you on your social awareness and willingness to do something about it, but it's really up to the Chinese people and politicians to make changes for themselves, unless it affects international agreements.

That being said, while I wouldn't expect a response from Riot, I always find it good practice to stick to your guns. Hold off on RP buying if you feel like it means something to you.

_ Why you cannot blame Tencent for developing Sesame Credits _

For a customer. Do you blame the people who make guns for the deaths of people killed by guns? Again I'm all for awareness and meaningful activism towards human rights issues. I just don't believe Tencent is to blame, they are just a product of the domestic policies in china. Same as when your internet provider spies on you for the NSA. It's not necessarily your ISP that is evil ( though most are) they just end up a part of a corrupt system they are forced to work in and with.

_ Bonus _

Riot has no rights legal or otherwise to make negative comments on something their parent company may or may not be directly or indirectly involved in.

_ TLDR _

Rito did nothing wrong. Leave em alone. They're just trying to run a business and happen to be owned by someone who has preconceptions about them from other people.

I doubt even Tencent has much of a say in this. It's not like the US, the Chinese government has essentially complete power.

If I got anything wrong just shout it out and I'll research it and correct it/explain accordingly. kbye

Edit: Fixed weird quoting issues and crap. Dere ya go.

Edit 3: I'm not trying to change your opinion, just make you more educated on it. At least have facts to back up an opinion, y'know?

Forgot to add this:

For those who do not know Tencent is now 100% the owner of Riot Games.

As long as Tencent doesn't go all Nintendo of Japan and messes with everything that their culture doesn't understand (coughyoutubecoughnintendocoughgoddammitjapancough), I can be okay with this change. I'm still gonna hate Tencent, if not because they are huge for Sesame Credit, if not because they own way more than they probably should, at least because their main site is called QQ.com.

I don't understand what happened, so what I understand is this Chinese company ,Tencent, something bought Riot Games and they technically own League of Legends. Does this mean or change anything to the game at all?

Even though nothing can be done about it, you have to admit that is something quite scary. Almost dictatorial, even.

The chances are remote that League will suffer the same unfortunate fate the chinese people will, i understand that.

But looking on the other side....it could well serve as a way to deal with toxicity.

Too toxic? Well, no first victory of the day bonuses OR IP for you. Not toxic at all? Congrats, he's a free mystery skin.

Or something of the sort.

Anyway, the idea of Tencent tightening the leash around Riot's neck is something very much possible, but i doubt it will happen. After all, if with 90% of the stock owned already Tencent never even poked Riot in the back with a knife, i doubt it´s the remainder 10% that´ll turn them from Riot's stepdad into Riot's abusive stepdad.

All in all, very good post. I was mildly confused about this whole situation. Now i think i got around to understand it.
