DDOS and Gaming security

Here is a post i found on the interwebs that should be interesting please understand that i do not take credit or claim for this post i'm just sharing something that i have come across in which i think some people will find interesting.

There have been several events recently that got me thinking about this topic. One of my concerns, anytime I do.. well, pretty much anything Online is Security. Always worried about stolen identities, credit card Fraud and Thievery... and just general well-being over all.

The trend in gaming over the years with hacking and Denial of Service attacks doesn't seem to have improved.

Recently XBL and PSN have been hit with DDOS attacks, and Sony's president even had his flight diverted due to a threat made online. A few nights ago, Twitch was hit by a DDOS attack.

Now all of this, to some, might seem inconsequential. After all, these are just video games or sites streaming video games, right?

In my mind, the problem is far worse and has potential for serious implications if changes aren't made to eradicate this kind of behavior. A few years ago, Sony was hacked, putting their user's personal info at risk. There has been a spate recently of SWAT teams being called out to gamers' and Youtube personalities' houses, diverting critically important public safety services.

If these groups or individuals can DDOS major sites and gaming networks... what is to say they won't do something similar or worse to more important facets of life? To Public Utilities or social organizations that people count on for their well-being?

Some may say it's extreme.... but couldn't this behavior be classified as a form of Terrorism? The future of terrorism moving forward won't always be about planes slamming into buildings, car bombs, or suicide bombers... but about Cyber attacks, stealing identities, and slowing down or bringing to a halt services we use every day.

The way I look at it.. if we tolerate these attacks, even the smallest of them... we are exposing ourselves for far worse, more malicious attacks in the future. Slowing down a game or hacking it may seem like innocent trolling... but isn't the intent behind it and the potential for escalation far more of a concern now than ever before?

Maybe I am crazy. Maybe I am overreacting.. but curious to hear your thoughts on all of this. Can security on our consoles be improved? Can these kind of attacks be stopped? Should penalties for this behavior be ramped up beyond bans and into the criminal realm? Can gaming companies and Hardware/Network creators track and prevent this behavior? Are they doing enough or should more be done?

Edit:This is where i got the video from just in case you are interested http://krebsonsecurity.com/2014/02/the-new-normal-200-400-gbps-ddos-attacks/

Riot should just have back up servers that are up to date but not running so then they can't be accessed and when the main server gets hacked they switch out the servers and the Ddos people can waste their time hacking an inactive server

I think marking Cyber attacks as terrorism is a pretty big leap, I do agree that those who commit such acts should be punished, but I don't think marking cyber attacks as terrorism is the best course of action.

The biggest problem with internet security is that those who are in power, and are able to enact laws have little to no knowledge about the systems. And if officials grossly generalize, like they often do, then many things fall under the purview of "terrorism"/"illegal acts".

Our only current course of action is to educate and aim to create systems that can predict and prevent the attacks from completing
