I'm not sure if this is a gameplay question or a story/art one so here goes...

Why is it that in a lot of games, particularly online games, the person with a sword and a shield is automatically a tank? I mean the only sword and board champ we have is a support/tank. Why can't a person with a sword and a shield be a bruiser instead?
