Question about normal matchmaking.

I've been playing since season 1, but I only played like 100 games between then and ARAM existing.. and I have nearly 1000 games played on ARAM. Reasons aside, I've never played ranked. I've been unranked since the beginning. Last night, I queued with 3 of my friends(3 of us unranked, 1 a bronze, and the 5th random person was a bronze I believe). We got dumpstered. Hard. My unranked friend went something like 0/8 extremely fast which proceeded to snowball into a horrible loss with the Top Poppy going something like 13/0/? before we were able to surrender. The next game, a Lux got 3 kills on my friend's bronze Veigar and she proceeded to go insane, getting something like 22 kills by the end of the game (We didn't surrender that one, but it was only like 27 - 30 minutes anyway)

Now, I know we have a lot to learn considering how little SR we actually play. Our teamfight mechanics are there and we know the ins and outs of most characters, but we were just getting trashed. It made me sad so I went to check on who we got matched against... and the ranks were just all over. The Poppy was Platinum, the Lux was Gold, and a lot of the other people we played against that night were gold/silver, with almost no bronze/unranked.

What was weird is that a few days before, we had won the 2 games we had played pretty handily, they surrendered both times at 20ish. I checked those people's ranks and they were all unranked/bronze.

Sooooooooo... tl;dr

Is the match making just stupid right now?

I didn't want to hop into ranked without getting re accustomed to the rift, but wouldn't I stand a better chance there since I'd only be matched against people of my skill level? Or is it borked there too?

Is it also possible that ARAM MMR effects normal games as well? I read in the past that it did not, but a lot of times I'll be matched with platinum and diamond players in ARAM. I'm sure it's just a coincidence, but it's at least an answer.

Summoner's Rift is a whole different game compared to ARAM. It will take many matches to get acquainted/reacquainted with the many different strategies and nuances of SR. CS'ing, dragon control, baron control, warding, ganking, team fighting, when to play safe/aggressive, when to capitalize on an enemies death, the list goes on and on.

Also, there have been shifts in strategy with each season, and sometimes even between patches. Keeping up on this can be challenging for the casual player.

My suggestion is to continue playing Summoner's Rift (can be normal or ranked) and gain experience. It could also help to watch streamers to see what their strategies are in a particular role.

ARAM MMR does not affect Normal or Ranked MMR. You will be able to see what people you are playing with/against and their rank and MMR by visiting op.gg, and entering your name, and selecting "In Game" while you are at loading screen.

To answer your question, Matchmaking isn't "stupid" right now. Just at you and your friends rankings, you will find huge fluctuations in skill.

Thanks for the response!

Yeah, I definitely need to up my mechanics and learn more about what to do when. I've watched tourneys/streamers for many years s I have a general idea about WHAT to do, just not the execution exactly. :)

Do you have any idea why it'd match us up with Platinum and Golds then? Is that something that just happens sometimes? I don't mind getting destroyed and learning in the process, but one of my friends gets super depressed when we have no chance and then just only wants to play ARAM. I'm looking for an answer saying we just got unlucky, basically. :P

well it's the beginning of the season, so plenty of gold/silver are put into bronze, therefore the match making right now is bullshit, season5 silver/gold complain about matching with useless bronze teammates and bronzes complain matching agaist people much higher than their skill level.
