Mechanical keyboard for laptop?

I was wondering if anybody here uses a mechanical keyboard with their laptop. I want to get one, cause my current keyboard is a bit janky...but I'm not sure if the setup would be weird. The keyboard would be sitting in front of the laptop, further away from the screen than what I'm used to. And consequently, the laptop would be further away from me, and the distance might throw me off cause I'm used to having the screen right there about a foot away, not a 1.5ft-2ft away..it might seem like a useless worry but comfort is a must when gaming competitively. Personally, moving the laptop even 1/4in makes a huge difference for my hand positioning/comfort.

After saving up (it was quite pricey) i bought myself a Razer BlackWidow Ultimate (2013 edition). This is the best keyboard i have ever owned. Some people do not like Razer. It's a preference. I couldn't be more happy! There are other great choices for mechanical keyboards and once you have one, you dont ever want to switch back! Its worlds of difference in response and ease of use!

apart from that, i would suggest for you to get a bigger monitor, and use your laptop as a desktop when you are playing competitively. That way, you don't have the awkward keyboard in front of keyboard thing going. you can get a 24" monitor for under $100 (wait for a good sale). that's how i got my two! http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=dell+e2414hx&N=-1&isNodeId=1

I currently use a Steelseries Apex keyboard. I like it with my laptop because it effectively adds one more USB port to my setup. I've also used Razer Black Widow keyboards at a local gaming cafe and liked using those.

I would suggest, if you prefer playing in a low-lit room, to get one with backlit keys.

As far as your issue with the screen distance, unless you have the kind of laptop that lets you flip the screen and possibly 'tent' it with the laptop keyboard to the back, you may want to look at using a second monitor.

Thanks guys for your feedback, I never considered a second monitor! I'll definitely look into it.

If you have another USB keyboard to try first and see if its something you can get use to then that's what i would do before making the final purchase. if it is then i would suggest a mechanical keyboard a million percent :)
