What has league given you?

So I thought I would post a thread where people can post what they've gotten out of league of legends.

For me, a little back story.

My brother and I for the first 20 years of my life never really got along. With a 4 year age difference, we never really matched up in interests, friends, or hobbies. Often times I would find myself playing games alone, with my brother dismissing me, and at times openly hostile towards my presence. My childhood was spent constantly fighting with him. We were always holding a grudge against each other, we each have a plethora of scars from the other, such was the degree that we fought.

Eventually, after years of trying to gain his approval and develop a good brotherly relationship I finally just gave up. As far as I was concerned, he was no brother to me, because all he ever did was exploit our relationship in a way that harmed me. That's when I found league of legends. In league, I found a game in which I built camaraderie with people from the internet, joined groups online, and had a blast. Yet still, I longed for a brother that would do more than tease, yell, and fight with me.

Fast Forward 2 years, and lo and behold, my brother has started playing, and came to me for tips on the game, how not to die, etc etc etc. Over the course of one month, we went from people that couldn't tolerate the sight of the other to two people who would always crack jokes together, enjoyed each other's presence, and, dare I say, acted as the brothers that I always wanted. So to Riot, I say thank you.

TL:DR : League gave me my brother.

Great story! Glad you've both come together after all those years.

For me, my job (obviously). Also a really fun, free game that works on an older laptop!

Years of fun, the Warriors song, several friends, a love of competitive gaming, and now deep sadness over the fact that the company has strayed so far...

So I guess the good outweighs the bad, long run.

League has really given me a sense of... belonging. Being able to connect with other players (through games I play, the forums, Twitter, Boards, etc) has really kind of helped me find me find people like myself. I can say in all honesty that League of Legends has positively changed my life, and the friends I've made playing this game will last a lifetime.

LoL gave me a sense of.. wholeness. inc long boring life story: Growing up i always played sports; soccer, baseball, football, hockey, basketball. I played them all. however, i never REALLY enjoyed them, i just did those things because thats what all the other guys were doing and i wanted to fit in. Except it didnt; off of the field i never even spoke with the other teammates, because we didnt have anything in common besides the sport. I hate watching the sports, i dont like the sports fans, I never understood the sports fanatics who knew all the teams and players and stats. All of it never made sense to me until the longest time and I always felt like i was somehow sick or.. mentally wrong for not being so passionate about sports.

Until i found esports.

I found esports through Starcraft Brood War, and watched it, and Starcraft 2 for so long. However the SC scene has always been rather small in the West, and also really Korean, and i never had anyone to share my passion for these competitive games with.

Enter League Of Legends.

I started LoL in.. Season 2? and as i learned the game, i became engrossed in the pro scene. I love Esports, so much. never before until LoL did i understand those sports fanatics that i used to disdain. But now, that hole where i always felt 'wrong' has been filled. i know the teams, the players, the stats. I follow the roster rumors and the controversies that come along with this amazing esports community. And since LoL is much bigger in the west that SC, i have finally found a group of others as passionate as me, that i can share my esports experiences with. Riot has done an amazing job promoting LoL and the esports scene, and it has grown so much in such a short time span. so thank you Riot, keep doing what you do, i cannot wait for Season 5!

This story is awesome! Thanks for sharing.

It took me a year of convincing before my brother finally gave the game a try. Now we have another fun thing to do together :) What positions and champions do you like to play?

League has given me a lot. It's a fun way to stay in touch with friends, and it gave me a pretty sweet job. It's also nice to see it getting acknowledged in mainstream press -- my dad pretty much gave up on video games after Centipede, but he'll give me a heads-up any time he reads about League or eSports in general in a magazine or newspaper. It's a nice change from reminding me that I'm not too old to go to law school or something every year or so.

Well league kinda inspired me to turn my life around. I guess you could say so. I mean, when I first got into league, I would watch LCS often, and Cloud 9 was my favourite team. They were like my idols, and I adored them and looked up to them. I remember going through a rough patch in life not too long ago, I was really depressed and upset, and so I thought "why not give it a shot and message hai asking for help on how to get over my depression..." and he responded to it and actually helped me get over it and i've been happier ever since then. So thank you league, for giving us professional teams to look up to.

If anything, this game has given me humbleness. The ability to swallow my pride and admit I was wrong, and use my mistakes to improve upon myself. I've improved so much since I started, and this skill began developing when I started ranked. Instead of blaming "n00b feeders" I began to rethink MY performance and what I could do better. I stopped playing ranked after dropping quite a bit into Bronze 4. So I played normals and won. I won a lot. and eventually I was queueing up with friends of mine that were Gold, laning against Silver 2's and winning. Making a big play and having the enemy Veigar say "That ain't no Bronze 4 Lee Sin" is the best feeling, and I couldn't have improved and honed my skills as I did without losses in ranked reminding me that I need to come to terms with my mistakes. Every loss is your fault one way or another, and if you want to win, you have to take it. I'm still in Bronze 4, but I just haven't ranked in case you were looking for a "I climbed from B4 to D4 in 2 weeks! WAAOOOWWW?!" I'm not it. But absorbing strategies and blaming myself for my mistakes has helped me improve because of humbleness

it's helped me stay connected with some friends, and it was the common interest that got me talking to a girl I dated for a year and have stayed friends with for about 2 years after breaking up. I've also made some friends through tumblr because of both playing the game

I stopped raging, whether it be road rage or everyday frustration.

I've realized it leaves me less satisfied as an individual and achieves nothing.. and you get reported.

Well I got to visit Riot because the community liked what I did and someone paid for my plane ticket.

I saw things I -still- can't talk about.

To all of those who are saying league is giving you less money, the proper way to phrase it is that league is keeping you in a less expensive tax bracket!

riot gave me a social life....ikr? i used to be a very shy kid, i'd grown up around adults with no kids around, and wasn't good at making new friends. I'd always been a big video game fan but i never really got involved with other players before league. However i made some friends through league, 2 who are currently good friends of mine, and a few others that are really cool. League was also my favorite game for a straight year+. So..thanks, you really brought me out of my shell riot ;p. .........................................and i like your hentai sites.........................

It's reassuring to know a game like League can give you your brother, and I'm happy for you both!

For me, League helped me realize that I'm an awful and competitive person. Growing up I was a competitive person from being bullied into thinking I wouldn't amount to anything , the adrenaline being in difficult situations, I could list a lot more. A little over 2 years ago a friend of mine introduced League to me as a means to get over an old MMO I played for years, since I had done nearly everything I had set my mind to in it. Back then League was this fun, overwhelming experience that I felt able to endlessly nurture my competitiveness, while not feeling like the race it was to git gud with MMOs. It was during this time that a handful of friends both from the internet and here at home would see or hear me playing and wanted to play together. For awhile it was fun, but I'm sure you can see where this is going.

Months pass, and the gap in learning curves were growing as well as a few egos. To shorten it up, from those months until earlier this year I became very tense and quick to judge the people who saw League a different way I did. I saw this game as a place to keep practicing and getting better, while just about everyone I know, save for a small handful, just wanted to play just to play. As a group we lost more than we won, and it began to bug me that it was harder to play with people who initially made me feel more comfortable than when I play solo, and I basically ruined this game for them. They saw playing solo as a less enjoyable experience, but relied on people like me to carry or be that leader no one else tried to be in our games. In the end I ended up burning a few bridges and ruining the fun this game brought them over trivial things I wish I was more understanding about. League is more of a game I play at my own leisure by myself or with a small group of friends, but it lost most of the fun I had with it. I'm by no means a great player, and I acknowledge as many mistakes as I can find so that I can keep improving. The best way I can sum up this whole chunk of text is to value your friends you get to share fun games and moments with, because you'll lose the people who just want to have fun with something that tension between those involved is common.

I've spent the last few months with my online friends other playing games and genuinely having fun. Even though I still play League now and again, it doesn't overshadow the things that matter to my friends. So I suppose it's a good ending, but I have things to learn about splitting my personal agenda with what others care about.

**tl;dr **

I like competitive games. Played League with a large group of good friends. Ruined friendships and discouraged others from playing. All the regret. Please don't be an ass to your friends over trivial garbage. Currently making up for what I threw away playing League.

Leagues gives you anxiety but teaches you the importance of cooperating with other people. Communication is a skill that is needed bot in games and in real life :)

A waifu, Ahri.

No, really, League got me through an annoying period of my life that I regret a lot. The annoying "what do I do with my emotions" phase. By placing the uncontrollable feelings inside me towards Ahri, I controlled myself from going insane. I really don't want to think of what would have happened to me mentally if I didn't put all of my affection into her.
