Lore Trends by Champ Releases

2009: The Original Crew

All champions at this point were billed as entities summoned "from other worlds" to fight for the League. As yet, the major factions such as Noxus, Demacia and Ionia were outside players, and Riot was very much throwing things at the wall until they stuck. The foundations for Freljord, Shurima and Ionia were laid down, as well as Teemo and Tristiana, who were at the time different races (yordles and meglings). Much of the canon from this era has been ret-conned, with champions taken from their own unique odd little settings and fitted into their modern canon slots (like Karthus migrating from the howling marsh to the shadow isles). The concept of summoning from other worlds was quickly retconned and today very few champions reflect that lore, the clearest being Morgana and Kayle who have not been integrated into Valoran

2010: The High Era of Politics

The lore really got into swing with the introduction of the various faction crews. Each champion released was tied carefully into existing champion factions, and we got many Demacian, Noxian, and Ionian champs. Poly over and Zaun were somewhat expanded and a clear cut factional theme took hold. This combined with the cohesiveness of the Institute of Lore makes this era the high point of the game for many when it comes to storytelling.

2011: The Drying Well

The limitation of the factional setting turned out to be the lack of truly interesting character types available. Woman/Man with weapon/magic can only carry so far, and it's around here we see the fall of Leagues cohesive Lore around about Riven. When we've got the head of Noxis and the prince of Demacia fighting, where else do you go? At this point, LoLs designers cared more about characters they wanted to make than fitting characters into the factional categories. They hadn't made an oddball like Rammus or Amumu in a long time, so the pendulum swung towards the modern era of League's lore, and if 2010-11 was the High Age, this was surely the Dark Age.

2012: Detroit Trope City

Almost every character in this region becomes a one-off, generally following a well known character trope to make them attractive and interesting "at a glance". To find Xin Zhao interesting, a player must first care about the Noxus/Demaci conflict and it's relationship to Ionia. To find Rengar interesting, a player must only recognize that he's meant to be a knockoff Predator-his only character is a takeoff of that pop culture character, as it Khazix's. Characters like Volibear, Nami, Fizz, Ziggs are released only because League didn't have a character like them and individually they were judged more interesting than the Karma's and Swains of the previous eras. Occasional faction champs were released, but few and far between and usually they weren't tied in with the others as they had been

2013-14: The Slowdown and the Era of Dissolution

Champ releases reaaaally start to slim out 2013-present. The lore is either near-nonexistent or is started but never finished, like Lissandras Freljord conflict. The cohesive Institute storyline with the players as summoners is not ever added to, and all references to that are removed from in game wherever possible. Reworked champions' lore is fragmented to remove them from that narrative and from the "tacked on" character interaction they had before.

2014: the death of the Bio Paragraph

Lore is reduced from a short bio paragraph explaining a character's motivation and backstory to short, ~500 word fan fiction style stories. Old champions who are reworked receive the same treatment such as Twitch and Karthus, and most new characters are just a picture and a few words about This One Thing They Did One Time, in the style of the older champs with the weakest lore (IE Mordekaiser). Lore is, at this point, completely dead.

I don't understand people with opinions like yours. What do you want them to do, release a novella for every champion? The lore is cool and all but isn't and never has been the main appeal.

Really, where do you get off saying it's "dead"? Less resources in it doesn't mean is discontinued. Updates and expansions will get done when there is time to get them done, in the meantime why don't you play some of the game the lore solely exists to support?

Riot hasn't released much narrative lore, instead focusing on Champion concepts and bits of theme. I agree it would be nice to see more narrative developments.

In the meantime, about a year ago I began Factions, which develops an ongoing plotline based on the outcomes of faction versus faction matches that anyone can join. We're about to hit the sixth arc, which will center around the discovery of a new continent. You can vote for which factions you want to be playable here. Each faction gets a roster of Champions selected for story, feel, and gameplay reasons. ("Feel" refers to how the Champion matches up with a given faction's overall tone: e.g., steampunk for Piltover. Even before they retconned his lore to make him Freljordian, we had Olaf on the Freljord roster, because he's obviously intended as a "Viking Warrior" or the like.)

We actually just published the second issue of our version of the Journal of Justice, The Summoner's Herald:

You can read it here: The Summoner's Herald, Vol. I, Issue 2

Our general lore page is here: Factions Lore Archives

From my perspective, it's pretty neat that Factions lore develops based on actual match outcomes and player decisions. It keeps it surprising, and takes advantage of the LoL "excuse plot" to put players in the center of the action, rather than just handing them a top-down story from on high.

Imagine League's story with A Song Of Fire And Ice vibe.

Magic users are closely observed and scrutinized as living catastrophes (as I understand, the Rune Wars were basically nuclear wars, killing countless people, reshaping the landscape and leaving fallout that renders the land inhabitable; Rammus and Wukong are technically mutants because of this).

Lissandra ashe and Sej had a smack down, nobody won, didn't get resolved in any way-they didn't even tell us who won the vote.

Untrue, Lissandra technically won.

Overall the score was:

  • Lissandra - 35.3125%
  • Ashe - 33.675%
  • Sejuani - 31.0375%

Even though Ashe and Sejuani have different ideals in regards to the unity of the Freljord, the fact that both are in opposition to Lissandra gives them a good chance at victory should they ever form an alliance.

That said, you are right that it didn't get fully resolved. However, from what I've gathered this seems to be intentional. The only event that ever occurred and had resolution was the Noxus v. Ionia match. While this is saddening, consider that Riot has been preaching improvement of that which is old in League. Lore is no different. I believe Riot is attempting to lay groundwork for all the different bits and pieces of information before bringing them together. The people who are actively working on things 'behind the scenes' are probably not allowed to disclose any more that tidbits here and there.

This goes back to the whole Aatrox being part of past battles (possibly even in the Freljord and could have been the reason the Watchers lost in the past), the Shadow Isles shenanigans, arrival of Vel'koz, Spirit Guard Udyr comic, heck even Braum and Gnar are arguably directly related to the Freljord event.

It is an exaggeration to say lore is completely dead. There is just very little to go around because Riot isn't visibly focusing on it. Riot themselves have said they want to flush out the world, they have a story to tell, etc etc.

That "A New Dawn" cinematic was supposed to help do this. It showed you the nature of some characters but it was yet again, a battle on the Rift. It was a good way to get new people to try the game based on the cinematic alone. Lore-wise, as long as these cinematics take place on the Rift you can't say that is moving lore forward without some other backdrop. If they made a cinematic that showed something like:

  • Noxian army + champions invading Ionia
  • Institute of War / summoners intervene and force a match on the Rift
  • Show Ionian reps winning, Noxus leaves Ionia in peace

There you go, interesting fantasy mini-story that can pull new players while staying relevant both gameplay and lore wise.

Quite frankly, I think Riot could generate plenty of interest for League if they focused on lore even if it was to play catch up. You could make a 1-minute short animation or even release a 3-4 page comic about Quinn when she went to the Freljord. Maybe one about Vel'koz visiting different sites for 'knowledge'. That's super accessible to everyone, can generate interest in characters/skins and takes way less time than a big 3D cinematic. More money to be made, new players can be attracted and lore-hogs get their fix. Easy peasy. I mean really, which do you think works better?

  1. A random person stumbles upon the pictures and text detailing Zac's birth/upbringing
  2. A random person stumbles upon a comic about Zac

Don't you think it is infinitely more likely that this random would say, "Hey what is this from/of?" when they see a comic instead of text on some forum?

as posted on another thread......

"Riot MilkManiac (NA) I'll take a shot at this. For clarity though, I am not on the lore team. However, I am a huge lore geek. I, like many of you, love books/movies/games with massive, fully fleshed-out worlds (Kingkiller Chronicles anyone?). So obviously, when I joined Riot, one of the first things I did was to gobble up any lore-related information and understand what's going on with it.

Here's what I learned: Lore is by no means forgotten. I'd like to draw a comparison to the Summoner's Rift Update. Around winter a lot of players started asking why there was no winter-themed Summoner's Rift. Some players assumed Riot just didn't care about the map anymore. However, by now it should be apparent that we didn't ignore flavoring the map, but instead we had most of our environmental artists working on SRU, which in my mind is much more important than having a winter-themed map. In fact, I would argue that making a skin for an older map, and delaying a newer map to do so, would be a disservice to players.

Getting back to lore, I know that since Freljord, there's be almost nothing related to lore that has come out. I also realize that many players, such as yourself, have determined that we are starting to "get cheap" with our lore and our world, and given the visibility you have, that's an understandable conclusion. But let me pose a different theory. What if the Lore is like the current summoner's Rift: It's functional and has some really cool features, but it also has some glaring bugs and is by no means as pretty or as flushed out as it could be? What if the reason why there are no Journals of Justice or any lore updates of any kind are because everyone related to lore is working on stuff that takes priority?

How cool would that be ;)"
