Streaming Design Help and Promotion

So I am a small streamer who is mostly just getting his start Ive got the basics down and all but I know I need to find: 1) More ways to interact with my audience (i.e. Music, bot interactions) which I have no idea how to do I do bad with written instructions and get discouraged quickly; 2) Creating overlays to aesthetically make the stream more appealing, I have for several weeks been looking for someone to design overlays for in game and one out of game one and found no way of contacting someone to do so, or when I do they don't follow through or stop responding. 3) I know one of the best ways to spread your stream and draw people in is through montage/ compilation videos, however as you're probably getting the idea I am not too technologically inclined and not very educated in editing such things let alone how to save clips how would someone go about this?

I'm really just a small guy trying to find his way in a very crowded market obviously. I want to be able to bring my stream quality up to the "industry" standards so that aesthetically and interactively it meets everyone elses standards. Past that I believe my personality can shine through once I get some momentum rolling. However it is quite difficult to keep the energy going when 3 people are watching ( this is a character flaw that I am working on and I know also one of my biggest issues in growing) however Ive had a couple very successful days with over 20 viewers and those days are awesome and everyone has fun. I want those nights to be up to par so every one watching gets the best possible experience I can bring them. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Be it just advice or even walking through these things with me it would mean a great deal to me!

Thank You,

P.S. Not putting stream name on thread as I am not here to promote but get help I will not be a shameless plugger!

Starting off streaming is a challenge in itself and usually fueled by trial and error. I've been streaming off and on for the last 2.5 years and only seriously gotten into it this past year or so. I am not a big time streamer but I can share what I have learned so far :)

  1. Music can be tricky as your stream vods may be muted if twitch's detection bot notices that there is copyrighted music being played on stream. Now there are some pretty cool artists and groups who produce music that they allow anyone to use on stream (Monstercat for example). Bot wise for interaction I use twitch alerts for follower, hosting and donation notifications and moobot for an auto moderator to keep spammers and what not in line. I also use a program called ankhbot which allows me to have information messages I set to popup in chat throughout the stream, and it allows other cool things to be added like chat minigames http://marcinswierzowski.com/Code/AnkhBotR2/

  2. Overlays can be tricky and this is where a lot of trial and error comes into play. If you looking for specifically a League Overlay there are a ton of talented artists who create them for streams and there are even those who create them for free (Google searches are a huge help in this area)

  3. Twitch has a great knowledge base on how to take clips from your vods that you can then export to channels such as youtube. Its all relatively easy to use (Thankfully, because I suck at video editing lol). I would suggest looking through the twitch help section and hitting up the twitch subreddit if you are stuck.

As for promotion, social media is your best friend. Twitter and Facebook can start to bring in viewers which can turn into followers. Post messages when you are going live, send out information about future streams you are going to do, maybe certain events you are planning.

All in all my the most important advice I can give is to stream because you enjoy it, have fun on your stream and engage with chat as much as possible. Even if there is nobody in chat keep talking like there is, you never know when someone may pop in and if they see you're silent and just staring at the game they may leave. I do this even when I am not streaming as an exercise to build it as a norm so it just flows when I am streaming. Oh and make a schedule and keep to it(Super important).

There is a 4 part video series that Cohhcarnage put on youtube on how to break into streaming and how to build your stream. I highly suggest checking it out as the videos have a ton of great tips for upcoming streamers.

These are all great questions! I'll see if I can have someone with more experience give some insight with their own tips and tricks.
