Lower toxicity, Limited Chat options solution maybe?

Me and like so many other ppl in games now just hate queuing up for 2 years, getting auto filled and then listening to a team mate rage, flame to just top it off and make your day.

This may or may not be a good solution but the thought occured to me when playing DBZ XV2 and the pings that we have now.

In Xenoverse 2 when you play an online mode, there's a chat bar option, with a list of things that you can select and put into the chat, like:

  • Hello
  • I'm On My Way
  • GG
  • WP

And you CANNOT type what you want freely, only from the options sooooo....... add that in league

I'm suggesting adding something like this in league of legends as a ways of communication, and removing the ability to type what you want in chat. Somewhat similar to the ping options we have now where you click and drag over an option that puts into the chat ''OMW'' ''Missing'' ''Danger'' ect etc

Lets be real thats all we really need to type into chat and communicate with our team mates, timers, pings that give imformation and adding a little ''hey gj'' or ''Ooops i'm sorry'' in there every now and again when we do something good or make a mistake.

Right now the issue is that we have somewhat too much freedom to type what we want, ppl arguing in chat bcs they think they know better, flaming saying they'll afk feed, wishing a certain desease on someone etc and then probs getting chat restricted / banned and being called a ''toxic community.'' With this proposal there is no flame, no rage, just a healthy chat and game enviorment.

I know there will be issues such as ''ping spam'' when someone makes a mistake when they could as a wise Sky Williams once said ''hey just don't.'' And the whole ''DUDE, CHAT IS SO BORING NOW, I CAN'T HAVE MY FREEDOM TO TYPE WHAT I WANT IN CHAT AND CALL MY TEAM NOOBS AND HOW BAD THEY ARE, NOW I CAN ONLY TYPE NICE THINGS IN CHAT, I CAN'T BE TOXIC NOW, NO TOXICITY IN 2K17 LEAGUE OF LEGENDS ANYMORE'' imagine that.... Or the whole ''I can't type my ''constructive criticism'' anymore'' .. where most likely it sturs more arguments when before and they'll probs mute you and report you anyway for verbal LUL, so it auto solves the problem.

For those who arn't familiar with the Xenoverse 2 chat menu, i'm sure someone has shoved it on google images / youtbe somewhere to show you how it works and get a beter idea of what i'm talking about.

Keep the option to /r reply to someone in game and ofc the friend chat in the friends list but just remove the option to freely type in game, and add more options that will provide a healthy and helpful and easier way to coomunicate with your team, and remove the flame all together.

I really don't think there should be more limited chat. I mean, there IS a mute button. However, I can see where you're coming from. While this would likely solve a fair amount of problems of toxicity, it also creates problems in that people can really no longer give constructive criticism, and the constructive criticism of better players that aren't babies can help you learn and grow as a player yourself. I've been playing this game since season 1, and I typically try to give out constructive criticism when I can. I can also see problems in this with objectives. For example, you might remove the ability to use chat to set up different things around different objectives, particularly baits. If they don't have "Bait at Baron" as an option, you would really need voice chat to set up things like that, which, hint, Riot has said recently that they want to put out a voice chat system worked into League directly. They had one made several years ago, but scrapped it without releasing it out of fear that it would increase toxicity, however, now, looking at different stats and things, they've realized that the benefits of having it (better team play) typically outweigh the potential of increased toxicity, which, because people are using their voices instead of keyboards, in many games that have voice comms, isn't as much of a problem.

On the other hand, we can look at Smite as an example, which has all 3 of these ways of communication. There's a chat box you can use, however, most people just don't. You also have Curse, which Hi-Rez partners with and uses to make available optional voice chat that anyone who gets into a group who has Curse can use to chat with anyone else who agrees to the chat and has Curse. They even have a reward for using this in 5 games in Curse Apollo, a unique skin with that being the only way to get it (also comes with Apollo free if you don't own him). Finally, they have a very complex ping system that you press V to pull up and then have a whole ton of options, then a whole ton of other options from pressing V again, and then a whole nother ton of options for pressing V a third time. This is what most people use to chat, because, once you get used to it, it's a ton faster and a ton better because it also has your announcer pack say it to the whole team, rather than just a ping. For example, if you were to say "Enemy missing middle!" "Be careful right!" you could either type it out in the chat box or press VF2 VC3 to have it say that out loud to your entire team, and it even adds something for you to use your Gems on by allowing you to buy awesome sounding Voice Packs for both Gods and their Skins.

Either way, if a system like this were to be implemented, first off, it should never replace the pure chat system, and second, it should have a shit ton of options available, like Smite's does. I have personally never seen a Smite player be toxic, playing the game on and off since season 1 (though on and off enough that I'm still not even level 30 yet and it's, what now, season 4? 5?) and I haven't played a single Ranked game (again, not level 30 yet).

Communication is key in LoL. We have to be able to communicate clearly what we want to happen. I try to help people out with champs that I know how to play that they may be new on. Not everyone does. There will be toxicity no matter what we do. I do like the idea of the game saying what you are pinging. like when I am pinging the ADC to run instead of trying to 1v4. They hear "RUN RUN RUN" instead of just the generic warning sound. I may or may not be thinking of a jinx i played with earlier. >.>
