I have been told that MMR is based on your wins and losses and is adjusted according to the MMR of your team vs. the MMR of the opponent team. When you beat another team, you get an increase in League Points (LP) and your MMR goes up, more so if the opponents have high MMR. When you lose, your LP goes down and so does your MMR. Riot uses your MMR to create teams for a game. They say that they try to match you others who have a similar MMR. But, they will often put you in a match with others who have a very different MMR, if they can't find enough people at your skill level.

If I understand this right, what really sucks is that your MMR is not based on your performance. It is based on your TEAM's performance. Since there are 10 players in Summoner's Rift, you are, on average, only 1/10th of the morass of factors that determine if your MMR will go up or down after a game. Even worse, if you play Solo Queue, you have absolutely no control over who is on your team or who you will play against. These are likely the two most significant factors that drive your MMR up or down. And, again, you have no control over them in Solo Queue. This is all determined by Riot's servers. Trolls and feeders usually lower your MMR, unless you are good enough to compensate for them. Quitters also lower you MMR because they nearly always cause your team to lose. Since these type of people tend to be in the lower levels, you may hear people complain about it using the term ELO Hell. Elo is a rating system similar to MMR. I have heard people say that you have to have Gold 1 skills to get out of Bronze 5 because of the trolls, quitters, and feeders. There is no limit to how bad a player in Bronze 5 can be. There is no other tier or division like it. You can check in to Elo Hell but you can't check out.

You can go to sites like LOLKing and see an approximation of your MMR and your team's MMR. Also, you get a look at an approximation of your opponent's MMR. You might notice that Riot does not do a very good job of balancing the teams. Often, one team has a considerable advantage. LOLKing will tell you the statistical likelihood of your team winning a given match-up. Although ideally it should 50%-50%, it is often something like 43%-57%. My team always seems to be the less likely to win. There are other sites out there that estimate your MMR other than LOLKing.

If I got any of this wrong, then someone chime in and set us straight.
