The Types of People You Play With and A Way To Fix It. (Please Riot-Just look)

Something has been bugging me lately about the different types of people I am encountering while playing League of Legends. It has taken me a while to pinpoint the exact issue but I think i finally figured it out and would like to offer a solution.

The Problem: League of Legends is a game. Everyone would agree when I say that and games are meant to have fun with. While I often have fun while playing games, the objective of a game is different for everyone. There are those that have the mindset of "Play to Win" and those that have the mindset of "Play for Fun." To me this is a big deal. I have a very strong mindset of "Playing to Win" and when I get paired up with people who simply don't care about the outcome of the game and are there just to have fun, it causes issues. When the team is not on the same page it creates conflict and fighting ultimately leading to a bad experience and most often a loss.

The Solution: There needs to be a way for people to be paired with others that have the same interest. I would very much like to see an option/setting that allows me to choose my gameplay frame of mind and share that experience with others. I want to select an option that says "I am here to win" while others can select an option that says "I am here to have a good time regardless of the outcome" (or something like that)

I hope I got my point across and that this seems like a good idea to others. Please share and upvote if you like it Amumu

Edit: I should iterate that I am NOT talking about Ranked play in this discussion. I am referring to those competitive players, such as myself, that want to play in the goofy game modes to relax and have fun while still trying my hardest to win the game. With Riot talking about releasing varies game modes throughout the next year I think this may be something that needs to be included NOT with the Normal and Ranked game modes but with ARAM and OFA game modes. :)

Honestly, I think the team builder mode that they're implementing, will cut quite a bit into this problem. At least I believe that a starting part of the reason why people are never on the same page has to do with champion selections.

I watched my boyfriend play a game yesterday where he picked AP Maokai top. They accused him of trolling right off the bat. Maybe another person would call that "playing to have fun".

I don't think that having different "frame of mind" gameplay modes is something practical or even feasible. You kind of...already have that, with Ranked, and Normals, as other people have said. Games are GAMES. Some people will ALWAYS strive to do their best, regardless if their main desire is to have fun, or to win.

And then there will always be people who just don't give a shit. That's what happens when you have games with communities that are freely open.

Personally. I play this game for fun. That does NOT mean that I don't want to win. That does not mean that I don't play to win. But sometimes, I'm sorry, especially in something like ARAM or OFA, I am just not going to perform up to my usual standard, for all sorts of reasons. In all of the OFA games I've played, except for ONE (my last game with Zyra), I have been given a champion I never ever played before.

**If you want players that you can count on to be consistent, then you need to put teams together yourself. **

Maybe you should take advantage of the public LoL chat rooms and find like-minded people, or find people on other sites, or here on the forums.

When my boyfriend was trying to teach me to play this game a few months ago, he went into the chat rooms, and found people that would be willing to have someone like me who knew nothing about ANYTHING, on their team. That's how I was carried until I was like level 25. And it was better for everyone. It meant that he and I could play together despite our level difference (since he was already ranked then), and I wasn't getting yelled at every game for being a noob lol And then, I had other people to help me learn too, and it wasn't an imposition.

Well they have it so that is supposed to be normals are for fun and rank should be play to win. People don't get that though; causing problems for everyone. This new season isn't helping either because all anyone does is troll with Relic shields.

Esterni,

I would like to point out a very simple solution to your problem. If you create a fun and enjoyable experience for yourself and your teammates, then you can fulfill the happiness factor during the process of securing your beloved Win.

I was amazed that I was able to secure a 5 game win streak despite poor self performance in MMR/ELO "hell" all due to my abilities as a conflict resolution group member. I hit a nirvana-like enlightenment coupled with a pure balance of mind. I pushed seemingly large issues like a Shaco ADC into the smallest corners of doubt, leaving room for plenty of hope. In other words we had a last pick grab shaco for ADC. The team was ready to 'GG', I assured them to focus on mid to lane game while playing defensive. I encouraged them so that despite early losses we can hope shaco will become the great. The shaco and bot lane were of little worry once the game started and we, the team, agreed to push the shaco pick behind us and focus on the future.

Now, Esterni, does this mean you will have to develop yourself to become a better group member and/or person in order to secure wins in any environment? YES! Welcome to the competition baby!!

Sincerely, ResistImpulse

practitioner of conflict resolution

I would enjoy a queue option where I can try out new builds that may or may not work without letting my teammates down. Bot games are a very poor test for new builds since everything works.

I love the responses from different people on this topic. I would like to ask a simple question and get responses on whether or not you agree with it. Because of my post i have received a lot of feedback about other league players and even advice on myself. Now I want to know if everyone thinks this is a good idea? There was a post with the math of the matter using my %s which may or may not be correct and it definitely shed some light on a different perspective.

Is this an idea that can be helpfull even though it may not solve the problem entirely. I would love to see this idea tested out and results posted on the effectiveness of it. :)

I don't know if there will ever be a way to fix it. I can't count how many times I've gone into a vs. AI match and had someone yell at me over a screw-up. I hate this so much that I find it hard to let go. The ironic thing is the only people who go into vs. AI matches and yell at their team over mistakes are (of course) hardcore ranked PvPers. People who don't find any appeal in playing ranked games generally don't start fights over things like that. I wish somebody would prove me wrong, but I've yet to be proven wrong.

As for your solution, I agree. Riot left policing the community to us, and it's not working. I think there SHOULD be a choice in the beginning. Two boxes: "I play to win!" and "I play for fun!". It would probably solve this problem temporarily.

@estemi, glad to know some people are trying to think of solutions rather than committing to the problem :). A Lot of people have spoke about this issue before, including people in this forum post specifically. Riot does what they can, looking it this aspect from all angles, including the one that includes maintaining as many people playing the game as possible. It's not an easy fix, I'd it was, people would be boring. This world is full of unique individuals, hence different views and opinions, which can lead to chaos, aka modern league of legends. Playing as a support and.adc for 3 years gives me a unique perspective on the game, one where I try to keep my team together, and one where I have to carry them on my back if they cannot perform their roles efficiently. The one thing that I have noticed over my years is the skill level of players directly effects their fun to competitive ratio. I would explain this I'm detail, but gotta go for now, if interested in my thesis let me know! Thanks

I know those feels. I'm usually on the "I'm having fun and no one can stop me" side as I foolishly turret dive because I am so tired of watching mine enemy run past the turret and get away. . . again. And nothing kills the mood more than someone who would can't handle the fun for fear of losing.
