The Alchemy of Acting Animation (Survey 1)

Sorry for the longish read (if you can get to the end, i would be grateful)

Hi all, I am working in the Auckland University of Technology on a theory about how to more effectively turn Anime into live-action film (as you probably know, most attempts at this so far have been complete failures) I am comparing Anime's live-action success with American comic books (which are obviously extremely successful) in the hope of finding out exactly what the differences are and why Anime isn't working in live-action.

If i am successful in constructing a sound theory about how to make it more successful (and testing/proving it) I am hopeful that it could influence for the better, future Anime live-action films.

I have already compiled a lot of research on the topic and written papers, but i now need good people like yourself to help me further the research, I have made a survey that will give me a lot of the answers I need to start creating some live-action anime characters (I will be spending the rest of the year creating costumes and running large photoshoots to test the theory based on the answers you can give me)

The survey designed is very friendly and fun (not all scary and test-like) and it would be a great help if you could fill it out for me (and/or maybe get a friend who likes anime to do so as well) it is only 20 questions long and most are multiple choice.

If all goes as planned and i am able to create some successful live-action characters, i will be showing them here so you can see what you helped create. and i will probably ask anyone who is interested to offer more feedback on my designs during the process, to nudge me in the right directions.

You may be wondering why i posted this on a 'League of Legends' website, the reason is because the LoL community is tight-knit and are used to discussing their ideas and opinions, plus Anime goes hand in hand with gaming and the two communities are often the same. (Gurren lagan Kindred/Rumble/Fizz and Shyv help prove this point xD)

And this research while targeted at Anime, will almost certainly be able to be applied to Lol as well in order to help any future live-action films that may or may not take place.

Thanks :) and feel free to a sky any questions or offer any ideas you have, below :)

TL;DR: I made a survey about improving Anime live-action films, please fill it out if you can. (its pretty)

The answer imo is simple; the way characters act in a manga/anime are way over the top and not often like one would act in real life. American comics can be just as serious or comedic, but not in as ridiculous a fashion. It just looks bad for a real person to act like someone does in japanese anime.

Did anyone else read this as Annie fans?

Sorry, but what you are trying to do is not exactly possible with many anime.

  1. You see, the main thing with western comics is that they still retain a realistic feel so to say. Batman, superman, or any other hero, despite having sci-fi fantasy or other premises still retain realism, even the most fantastic of movies such as Star Wars retain some realism that we can all observe.

Anime and manga on the other hand immerse in the fantasy that they have created. And more times than not it will be impposible to make it into a movie. They just create worlds that are simply riddiculous and work in an anime, but wont work in a movie.

Lets take Kill la kill for example. I really doubt you could ever make it into a satisfying movie. The same goes for something serious such as Code Geass. Even those anime that are references to old school movies such as Black Lagoon will most likely not work as a movie.

  1. Realism is not the only thing that prevents anime from being turned into movies. The other, is drawing style and emotions. In most anime, the characters faces are clearly defined and their emotions can be clearly seen. It is especially made easy with the style of drwaing big eyes to characters, because they give the most information.

Human faces on the other hand are more subtle, and it is harder to pertain a certain emotion that was in the anime.

  1. Characters are not easy to transfer into a movie.

It is a twofold problem. Again, the art style adopted by anime and the personalities they have are hard to transfer into a movie. You simply cant make a human character look like an anime one. Even thought Scarlet has shown that she can be simmilar to kusanagi. She still cant embody the same character. She can be simmilar, but i will simply not see her as the character, unlike with someone like batman or joker who can be embodied by actors easily.

And for personality. Lets take someone like LeLouch. How will you ever pertain his personality in a movie? There is simply not enough time for that. He is such a complicated character that is both loved and hated at the same time. To pertain the same personality would be near impposible for an actor, even a good one.

  1. Movie lenght.

Even the shortest of anime series span somewhere around 4 hours. For movie that is too long. In the anime you can have entire episodes for character building. It can take half an hour or even more. Such things do not transfer into movies so well.

In the current comic book movies, everything is fast paced, character building is minimal and restricted by time. It also helps that most people know the superheroes and what they would do.

Anime is different in that regard. It is not as fast, most of the time it has in depth character building and most people dont know the characters before going in.

What you are trying to do is commendable, but i seriously do not think it will work. It can work in some cases, but those are rare. Its the same as we have seen with video game movies. Lets take doom for example. Did you know a movie was made based on doom? Yea. And it was nothing like doom. Doom was a simple game, one mans fight against the demons of hell. The movie tried to be a drama, something more than just midless killing of demons. And that is wwhere it went wrong.

Again, it shows how a premise of a video game if tranfered into a movie could be considered stupid and thus changed, but then completely ruining the movie.

This is my opinion at least.

I like cartoons :) so I will help

I think the problem is realism. The super hero movies like Iron Man (while completely unrealistic) are still human things. Making a robot suit in theory is possible. Cartoons are typically way too over the top. Even with how popular Dragon Ball Z was, it hasn't been made into a real movie because throwing energy balls is pretty unbelievable. The second thing is that, at least in the US, the market isn't big enough for it.

Came into this thread thinking you said "All Annie fans"

That doesn't explain why I'm here, but still >.>

Hollywood is above the japanesse (or asian in general) movie industry. That's why the American comics get good movies, while Japanese ones don't.

The same way japanese anime > american anime

can I count anime type games in this...I don't really WATCH anime but I play games that are fairly similar like shin megami tensei series.

I did the survey, its a little bugged though. It ask you to rate details from greatest to least of how important various aspects of a character, like voice, body size, etc. But only for characters you know. So I did this, but when I got to the bottom it asked for me to fill out the field for characters I do not know.

The reason why live action movies fail is because they want them to fail.... at least on America. Producers can deduct heavy taxes if the movie fails so if you have a very succesful movie then you produce a shitty one to pay less taxes

I'd sure see a live-action movies of manga/anime like Berserk or Claymore. They have pretty "simple" fantasy setting and character designs, compared to some other excessive animes.

I suppose those are two main gripes about live-action movies based on anime being shit.

One, the setting is too unbelievable, if not simply too hard to simulate. For example Natsu from Fairy Tail alone would require so much CGI to pull off it'd become a 3D anime. Two, most animes and manga - for the sake of simplicity to create, I suppose - deal with character designs by haircuts, clothes and special marks, like tattoos and are otherwise identical. Basically you have no reference points when casting for real actors.

That's why the closest to "live-action anime movies" would be productions like Final Fantasy or Biohazard, though both are based on games, so even that's a stretch.

Though, would it really be that hard to create a live-action version of Ergo Proxy?

I suppose that's the difference in entertainment culture.

Japanese anime and manga market is just opening on the west. Before they completely didn't care what were their products' receptions outside of Japan, hence why some good animes were discontinued despite being much more successful abroad (give me season 3 of Spice and Wolf, already *sob sob*).

Now the trend tends to shift slightly.

While this is about video games I'm pretty sure this translates into anime's problem as well. While I recommend watching the whole thing, @ 1:35 has the answer in particular.

Also apologies if someone said this already.

that survey is way too long, all answers are required and second part requires lengthy comments and thinking. At least make the answers optional. :D
