[Tribunal discussion]

Hey summoners, and hey Riot

i have always had a feeling that the process that Riot uses to encourage good behaviour is dysfunctional, or at least could be vastly improved upon, and it is my feeling that most of the community agrees with me, so I made a thread about it.

This is a discussion within the community about if something should be done about the current state of the justice system.

####Why do we such a system to begin with?

  • In real life there are consequences for behaving in a destructive manner, as you interact with people you are more likely to meet afterwards and that know people you care about, Karma will catch up to you , one way or another. Now this doesn't happen in League of Legends, the average player does not play with and against such a small circle of acquaitances, and even if he did, they haven't got a way to affect him in his "Real" life. If you are toxic within your community there are consequences, if we had no tribunal there would be none for being toxic in LoL.

The tribunal serves as prevention, punishment, and correction for toxic play.

Now that we know the community needs to maintain such a system, let's look at what questions should we ask to determine whether a setup is desirable or not:

#####Is the system efficient?

  • Can everyone vote easily? Are there no unfair advantages or disadvantages in front of the tribunal? Does it process players quickly and accurately enough?

#####Is the incentive we provide for good behavior enough?

  • If it isn't strong enough players will not care such a system is in place, if it is too strong, the tribunal might hurt more than help.

And finally here are my thoughts regarding the matter:

  • We are in a dire need for voters and the tribunal is extremely inaccessible, this leads to tribunal cases usually taking months, and punishing a small percentage of the toxic population.

  • No one is afraid of getting banned, it is not even a real possibility seeing as the tribunal is down here in Euw, I have seen 2 month old threads complaining the tribunal has been down for longer than a month (http://www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/202w1r/the_tribunal_has_been_in_recess_for_almost_a/). It is hard to argue that a system like this is what we need.

  • Even if someone gets a ban and is punished it will be long loong after commiting his offence, the tribunal handled 6 month old cases back when it was working.

  • An official Riot figure stated that 1.4% of the players have been punished by the tribunal. This is way too low. I consider myself a lot less toxic than average, but do admit I should be punished for some crap I spewed a couple games. 1.4% of the players get banned? How many do you think are toxic and are more of a pain than they provide enjoyment? I would put this above 20% for sure. This alone is proof for me the tribunal does not work, for it to work I would want 60% of players (so that I too, are punished), to get at least a small ban, and the current figure is 1.4%. How many of those are automated leaver busters? Probably the majority.

A couple ofpropositions from my part would be:

  1. Have the tribunal within the client. Seeing how it is set up this wouldn't be hard to do. A public justice rating is something we should all be proud of and honestly there is little to do inbetween games. This would largely solve the tribunals need for voters and consequently the rate at which it handles cases, it quite probably would increase accuracy as well.

  2. Please be harsher, if you ban me that's fine, I will like it! As long as everyone is getting the same treatment and I see that ruining other people's games is not okay then I will be happy.

I do not know if Riot is working on any changes, if they are I would like to know what is being done.

Thanks for reading

I don't particularly agree with a lot of the content in this post, purely off my own experience within the Tribunal. For instance, you mention that the Tribunal is extremely inaccessible and there is a dire need for people to review cases. I don't find this to be the case, considering the dropped the level requirement for Tribunal case reviews from 30 to 20. Not only that, I used to hit my 20 case quota per 24 hrs easily. Now, it actually takes checking back throughout the day to see if any new cases have been compiled.

I think one of the biggest misconceptions about the Tribunal is that cases are put together simply based on chat log crawls. This is not the case. If people don't get reported, there's no case to be built, and most people don't bother with reporting a lot of things, or try to abuse to report feature to report players for things not within the confines of the Summoner's Code.

People do get banned, and it happens more than you think, but it goes back to whether or not the person was reported or not. So far I've only seen one person perma-banned but plenty of people have been temp-banned.

Personally, I serve on the Tribunal because I'm getting tired of what the community is turning into, and how it negatively impacts a player's experience. There are a lot of people in the community who complain, and complain, and complain, and yet they have a method to actually take part in resolving the issue right in front of them. The Tribunal is hardly a new system, people just don't want to invest the time and interest into reviewing cases since there are no 'perks or rewards'.

I honestly think there should be -some- form of recognition for the players who commit to reviewing and judging cases objectively, and who show to have a high percentage of accuracy (90%+). Maybe people who reach a 200 case review mark with a 90%or higher accuracy should get an icon and/or something like the Honor badges. The badges would show up on the character portrait so long as a 90% or higher accuracy is maintained. This will at least let others in the match know that this person is a dedicated member of the Tribunal Review and may give them pause to act in ways that go against the Summoner Code.

Naturally, you're always going to have people who don't care either way, and that's fine. Eventually enough reports will come in for those players who stick to their toxic ways, and a case will be built against them for review. On my part, I have a 90%+ accuracy rating within the Justice Review and I am by no means lenient against people who are blatantly offensive or abusive to anyone in the match, whether their team or the enemy team.

I don't think there's any practical reason to put review of Tribunal cases as a built in game mechanic, because it's important that each case and all of the reports and logs and information associated with one be looked over thoroughly in an objective manner.

In conclusion, I don't think it's that he Tribunal doesn't work, it's just that people don't put enough faith into it by filing reports (that actually need to be filed). No reports = no cases = no action. It has been, and remains to be, in the hands of the community. When they get tired enough of it, they'll stop up to do something about it. If they don't, then it shows they're obviously not as concerned with it as they act, and things will get worse for a time.
