Starcraft UMS (use map settings) maps, or Why I do not intend to use the community beta.

Would have posted this on the forums if it had not felt like it would fall on deaf ears.

I have many reasons for not liking the Reddit format, but in the interest of being focused on one, lets talk about Starcraft Broodwar. Starcraft and Starcraft Broodwar had huge online communities, some of them focused around playing what were called Use Map Settings maps, these maps allowed the creators to override the standard game conditions, such that some of these maps had almost nothing to do with Starcraft other than the use of the game assets. These maps were unique experiences, some of them even lead to the creation of MOBA itself! It was easy to find popular maps, many people would host them over the course of an hour, but sometimes you would find a diamond in the rough, some map that some unknown person had poured their creative soul into and created something worth more than its base components.

When Starcraft 2 came out, Blizzard "supported" the UMS community by adding popularity ratings to UMS maps, and within a week the entire first three pages of UMS was stagnate. Rarely would anything new show itself, the same games were played by the same people the same ways over and over and over. You could keep scrolling through to find new things, but it was an extra burden on the user to find new content.

This is what I loathe about Reddit and sort by popularity systems. Sure, it may be faster to find the "best" post but you increase the difficulty a user has to deal with to find good content as its posted. You also stagnate the conversations into everyone talking about one or two posts, and not having a chain of discussion that is easy to follow from a chronological format

Because of this, and other reasons I intend to use the forums for as long as possible, and avoid this "community" area if it replaces the forums.

Ps: If someone could fix jumping to red posts on the forums so that you can just click next red post without scrolling each time that would be great. thanks.

Actually, there is an "artificial downvote system" that makes sure there is a rotation... Basically, the older your post is, and the more it'll get dragged down.

@Ps : indeed

You realize there's a "Find new posts" option on reddit right?

fun fact: league comes from dota, dota comes from AoS. AoS (Aeon of Strife) comes from Starcraft: Broodwars.
