PVP mode for trying new champion

Problem When trying a new champion, for the first time, you have 2 options:

  1. PVP
  • You're a liability
  • You may accidentally throw the game for your hard-working teammates
  • Many of us are dragged through losses we should have won because someone else is first-timing a new champion.

or

  1. Bots
  • Just absolutely boring
  • Doesn't give insight to how the champion really performs

Solution A new PVP Game Mode: "Champion Testing"

Players are not allowed to queue for this unless they have 10 champions available to them whom they have played 5 times or less. At Character Selection, only the Champions whom they've played 5 times or less are selectable/visible. Once they've played a champion 5 times or more, it is no longer usable in this queue.

The numbers 5 and 10 are of course variables to be determined by Riot game designers.

In short There is a special place where all players are in the match are trying some champions they really haven't learned yet and probably suck on. There is less expectation and flaming if somebody accidentally feeds a bit. Now, when I want to try out Yasuo for my first time, the matchmaking system isn't giving me an opponent expected to rival my main character, who I kick butt with. I no longer resort to the bore of bots to avoid this.

If you like this idea, please vote!

PS - I've already seen logic function which disallows players without some minimum number of available champions, and I've also seen data exports that would indicate you've already got this data available to your developers and ready to implement. From a Project Management perspective, I might be so bold as to presume this is a low-cost (ie. easy) implementation.

In my opinion Showdown was the perfect mode for this, you could practice your laning power and cs while facing another player without bothering teammates, sure, you may loose once or twice facing oponents whom use champions they have known for sometime, but that would let you improve faster as you should learn about what strenghts and weakness your champion has and how to deal with them.

Lol pretty much everyone tries out new champs in soloqueue, why would you care if you lose in normals? I always do dominion when i first play a champion just because people in dominion are so carefree and you can quickly gain levels and gold to see how certain items work with them. This "special mode" you are talking about would never work because who says there will always be ample amount of players trying out new champions for the first time? How often, on average, do you spend on first times? Maybe once every couple weeks? Queues would be astronomical. BUT with the team builder that is coming up, it does record how much you play each champion and tries to match you with people accordingly. Also bots works just fine because learning a champ for the first time means just learning what their skills do so you don't need much of a challenge.

Showdown would've been a good feature to keep in LoL and it is relatively quick than Normal SR matches to learn a champion. And besides its annoying to hear someone say "First time ____" and lose the match.

I like this, however, I sometimes try out different builds or try a champion in a different position. Sometimes I just need a refresher on how to play a champion I haven't used in a long time. I think the idea of a worry free environment to practice new champions or strategies would be a great idea, but it can't have the limit of only being able to use new champions. Yes it would run on the honor system, but if wins and losses aren't tracked, and IP gains are like beginner bot matches, then it shouldn't really matter if not everyone is trying something new. Its a learning experience and losing is a part of learning.

I do think that this would be a great thing to implement as a part of the team builder. Add as a search criteria, "Trying new things" and it sets you up in a group of people also trying new things. You talk it out, then set into queue where you fight another team also trying new things. It doesn't effect your wins/losses or MMR give just a bit of IP. It may take a while to get a game going, but you can now try out jungle Brand against people without having people yell at you for going jungle Brand.
