Guide on updated client's item set creator and personal thoughts and opinions.

#Greetings fellow humanoids! Tristana

It has come to my attention that the item set creator has been re-introduced in the updated League of Legends client, after being out of commission for some time. However, something is clearly different about it, besides the obvious auditory and visual changes. Now, many of you probably doesn't know what the item set creator is, which is why the item set creator was decomissioned in the first place,. Because not enough people was using it.

Now originally, I was only going to go into my own thoughts and opinions on the item set creator from the updated client, but I thought "Meh, might as well make it a guide for the people who have not yet discovered the glory of item sets, plus, if I get more people to use the item set creator, maybe Riot Games wouldn't remove it for literally no reason in the future". If you are one of the three people familiar with the item set creator in the world, then you can still join in on the discussion of what can be added/removed/changed from the item set creator. But first, I'm going to over what the item set creator is.

The item set creator is where you create item sets. [zombie-brand-mindblown]

No but seriously. The item set creator is a "sub-sub-tab" under the "sub-tab" "items" that is under the "main-tab", "collections". It used to be a single "sub-tab" under the "main-tab" "profile" but with the updated client it got changed. It is now also divided into two different parts, the storage of item sets, and the actual creation of item sets. [zombie-brand-mindblown]

I know it sounds complicated but it really isn't. Once you've memorized where the different things are, I'm sure you can find the "items" sub-tab one day. Now, for those who already are familiar with the item set creator, feel free to post your own thoughts and ideas down below. What do you think should be changed? So, without further ado, let's get right into the rambling. summoner 6

Welcome to the contents section. Here I'll provide headlines for the different topics I'll be adressing and discussing and the order in which they'll appear.

  1. Auditory and visual changes.
  2. The organizing process of item sets.
  3. The creation process of item sets.
  4. Conclusion.

Sounds good? Awesome! Be sure to grab a snack item 2010 and a drink item 2003 because this is going to be a lengthy journey. [slayer-pantheon-popcorn]

#1. Auditory and visual changes. Starting off, we have the shortest (and least important in my opinion) topic, the audio and visual experience (By audio, I mean the different sounds a button makes when you click on it, the different sounds when you mouse over something. By visual, I do not mean the placement of different features. I mean what is shown in the background, in terms of the theme the client is centered around).

Now, it should be obvious that with an updated client comes updated aesthetics. Providing different sounds and noises to pleasure your ears, and polishing up on the graphics to pleasure your eyes. However, it seems like this was the area that Riot focused the least on, compared to other things. Now, I agree with Riot on this. Gameplay and features should always come first, before miscellaneous stuff like music and graphic. Same rule applies to most games. Would you rather have a really fun game with bad graphics? Or a really bad game with good graphics?

In terms of auditory, a lot of things changed. During the duration of the legacy client, almost everything you clicked on made a satisfying "click" noise. However, it's gone now (as far as I know) and Riot have replaced it with... Not a lot actually. Most of the buttons you click on will make a sound, yes, but some buttons do not make any noise whatsoever, whether you mouse over it or click it. I don't know if this was done intentionally, or if Riot just forgot about it.

In terms of visually, it had changed quite a bit. In the legacy client it had this parchment-like ancient text kind of visual. Now it is very dark and blue. From my interpretation, it looks like a black darkness, illuminated by an arcane mist of magical energies. Now personally, I preferred the legacy client look over the updated client look. Maybe it is because I'm just a book worm, highly interested in reading and learning, or maybe because my brain has simply become used to the old look. However, I can understand why Riot would opt for something magical and mysterious, rather than a boring old text.

And that's it. Like I said, it is a very short topic and one that has the least impact on the item set creator as a whole (Again, in my opinion). [zombie-nunu-tears]

#2. The organizing of item sets.

Still with me? Great! In this part I'll talk about the organizing and storage of item sets. Keep in mind, that this is different from actually creating an item set. This is just how the storing of item sets work.

  • When you go under the sub-tab "items", you are immediatley greeted with what I like to call "the storage room". It's not actually called that, and it isn't even a room, but it serves the same function nonetheless. Here is where you'll have a comprehensive list over all your item sets. Now, originally, I don't remember how many item sets you could have in the legacy client, but until recently, you could only have up to 20 item sets (the amount as the amount of mastery pages you could have) in the updated one. However, it has recently been changed (without being announced) to 90.
  • That's right, 90 different item sets. That's a lot considering League of Legends, with the recent addition of Kayn, has 137. So if you created an item set for each champion in the game, you would only be missing out on 47 of them. And that's not even counting if you assigned some of those item sets to multiple champions. you would have to assign 47 of your 90 item sets to atleast more than one champion, in order to have an item set for everyone.
  • Now. In order to get item set creating, you have to "add" an item set to the storage room. After that, you can go into the item set, in order to perform various tasks (I'll explain later). Think of it like ordering a meal. You order your regular old burger or sandwich (adding an item set to the storage room), the order gets taken into the kitchen (the item set creator), and from there the food is created (by adding various items to the list). And then bam. Your food (item set) is complete. Yummy! [slayer-pantheon-rainbows]
  • After you have successfully added an item set and or created one (I'll explain how to do so later), you can do a number of (optional) things (besides taking it into a game). You can duplicate it. And you can delete it. You can also see which champion and map it is assigned to. Now, I have no idea why you would want to duplicate your item set, unless you wanted to reorganize the storage room (I'll explain shortly), or you wanted your storage room to become a giant mess. It is beyond me what Riot intended to do with this option.
  • Now, deleting item sets should be pretty self-explanatory. If you have created an item set for a champion you wanted to play last weak, say, because it was on the free-rotation, but you wanted to play somebody else for this week, you can always delete it. You can also duplicate and delete item sets you have added, but not yet begun creating. If you accidentally pressed the "create an empty item set" button, you can always delete the empty item set in order to make more space in the storage room. Duplicating an empty item set is beyond me, however.
  • I mentioned early that you had to duplicate your item sets in order to change where they are located within the storage room. That's because you can't drag your item sets around within the storage room, so you can't place your Ahri build at the top of the list of your item sets, if you created it after your Ezreal build. However, this is where the duplicate button comes into play. Orignally, I thought the duplication button was useless, since you didn't get anything out of duplicating a set other than having to look at it twice when scrolling through your storage room, but I soon discovered that you can re-arrange the storage room as you please. Unless you use the duplication feature that Riot added.
  • Let me give you an example. Let's say I have an empty storage room. I add two empty item sets to the list and dedicate the first one to Jhin and the second one to Teemo. I have finished building both builds and now I want the Teemo one to be at the top of the list. Unfortunately, that isn't a possibility. You either have to delete the Jhin set, putting Teemo at the top of the list because there are no other builds in his way, and then adding a new empty item set and you have you go through the creation process all over again. Or, you can just duplicate the Jhin item set.
  • Duplicating an item set, puts the duplicate at the bottom of the list, and adds a "(1)" at the end of the item sets name to indicate, that this one is the duplicate, so that is the one you have to fire if the meal you get has a cockroach in it. You can then delete the original item set, and remove the "(1)" from the name of the duplicate item set, to get your Teemo build on top of the list. Now, in my opinion, this is stupid. If I have to arrange 90 different separate item sets at once, I should be able to drag them to the top or to the bottom of the list as I please, instead of having to duplicate and delete everything everytime.
  • You can also view the recommended item sets provided by Riot Games themselves, in order to get an understanding of what you should build on certain champions. If you need further help in order to understand what items are good on the certain champions, websites like Mobafire, ProBuilds and op.gg can also help you out. Personally, this is a great feature to me. I can have an understanding of what to build on the specific champion, without having to open my browser and search for a certain website in order to get insight into what to build. However, I still go to the different websites from time to time to get even further help. I'll post links to the individual websites directly below, so you can get an understanding of what to build, when and where.

Clicking here will take you to the Mobafire home page Clicking here will take you to the ProBuilds home page Clicking here will take you to the op.gg home page

This post is not endorsed and or sponsored by any of the above websites. So you can't, unfortunately, call me a sellout. [slayer-jinx-wink]

#3. The creation of item sets.

Almost at the end, we just have to cover the last but most important thing about the item set creator. The item set creation process. And oh boy, how do I begin. The item set creation process is what the item set creator is most known for, obviously, and as such is the largest feature to cover. I won't be going into every single item in the game, because then this wouldn't be a forum post, it would be a novel titled "What am I doing with my life?". So, let's jump into it shall we?

  • When you've succesfully added an empty item set, you can click on it in order to start creating the item set. Adding various different items that you would want to use in-game. You have a massive load of options to choose from once you get into actually creating the item set. And I'll try to list as many as I can down below.
  • First off, you can rename your item set. Renaming item sets can help you make order in your storage room. Say you have 2 different Ahri builds, but you can't differentiate between them until you have entered atleast one of them so you can see which item set has which items. You can therefore rename item sets to help differentiate between them.
  • You can also create empty sets from within the item set creator. As well as duplicating it, clearing it of items and deleting it. Yo dawg, I heard you like item sets. So we put an item set inside of your item set so you can snowball while you snowball. [zombie-brand-mindblown] You can also decide which champion and which map this specific item set should be designated to.
  • The item selection grid. This is where you determine what items should go into your build and where. The item selection is massive, so I don't have time to go into every single little item, as was mentioned above. However, I can note that if you are looking for a specific stat that you want to build on your champion, I.E more Attack Damage if you're an Attack Damage Carry, or more Ability Power if you're an Ability Power Carry, look to the left of the item selection grid and you can cross off the different stat filters you want, and the item selection grid will adjust itself to only show items that provide those stats.
  • You can also clear all filters directly to the downleft of the item selection grid, below where all the filters themselves are located. You can also search for individual items in the "item search" bar above the item selection grid. You can also make it so that it shows items alphabetically, and depending on it's gold cost. Either from top to bottom, or bottom to top depending on what you chose.
  • However, I haven't even covered how to actually start creating an item set yet. I have only talked about utility and where to find all the that you would wish to add to your item set. In order to add them to your item set, you have to drop them into the designated area known as a "block". Blocks are like different sentences in posts such as mine right here. But instead of words and letters, it's items.
  • There are a few options you can do with blocks. First off, you can rename your block different things. For example, you could make a block titled "Offensive" and then create another block called "Defensive" and then add corresponding items to the different blocks. This can help you in deciding what to build during the course of a game. Are you doing well? Build a lot of damage and just start utterly destroying the enemy team. Are you doing poorly? Build a little bit defensive so you don't die as often. You can also reposition blocks, either causing them to go one block up, or one block down. You can also delete blocks if you created too many. You used to be able to add a block to the item set without having to drag any items into it, and I'm really sad you can't do that anymore.
  • For some reason, Riot has also changed the way dragging and dropping items from the item selection grid into a new block. Before, in the legacy client, the item would only register as having been dropped once the player has stopped holding his left-mouse button down. Now, it registers as having been dropped as long as it is within a block just in general. This makes it very hard to switch places of items, since both items has to register as having switched place, before the actual switch can happen. This is one of the biggest bummers for me about the updated client's item set creator. [zombie-nunu-bummed]

#4. Conclusion.

If you've made it this far, then congratulations! You've succesfully wasted most the time in your day on somebody talking about minor features in a video game. [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

In conclusion, I will say that I enjoyed the legacy client's item set creator more than the updated client's one. The newer one feels a lot more glitchy and clunky, and it can be hard to control and manage everything in it. I hope that Riot can fix some of the problems it currently has in the near future because I really enjoy using the item set creator. I also hope you found what you were looking for, and that my wall of text was a learning experience for those unfamiliar with the item set creator. I also hope that those already familiar, can post their own opinion down below and tell me if they agree, or that I have some form of mental disorder and should stay off the forums forever. I think that's enough of me for today. Goodbye!

This has been Lord smilla speaking. Have a nice day. Tristana

Random fact for today: Did you know that if you can continually proc the mastery at level 1, the Ferocity mastery "Fresh Blood" is worth the same as a free long sword every 6 seconds? [zombie-brand-mindblown]
