PSA: Arguments on the Forums

#Hey people, just wanted to remind everyone the very basics of forming and supporting a logical argument (for use on the boards):

  • Make a clear claim.
    • There's no point in making a claim if it's unclear what you're trying to say.
  • Provide your reasons behind said claim.
  • Support that claim with evidence.
    • In this game, most of your evidence will be stats and examples. Make sure your stats are reliable and that your examples are both relevant to your claim and actually support that claim. It's very common on the boards for someone to make a compelling argument, but fail to see that their examples counter their claim instead of support it.
    • Please keep in mind that single-case evidence is very unreliable. I.e., "Jayce was played support in a professional match."
    • Also remember to provide all parts of your evidence, instead of omitting things that prove it false. If you have to omit things to make it sound like the evidence supports you, then it _doesn't. _ I.e. The fact said player was in a heap of trouble for losing that match for his team.
  • Be sure not to falter in your evidence's relation to the topic. Reasoning like, "Elise got a movement speed reduction, so Lee Sin should too," doesn't fit. You need to state exactly why, in this case, Lee would need that speed reduction as well.
  • Finally, provide the answer to your claim.
    • On the boards, this would be where you tell everyone what you think needs to be done about your claim. I.e., "champion X's Q needs a nerf/buff," or "champion Y needs to be deleted."

This (hopefully) will help with two severe problems the boards have:

  1. Players taking what others say as truth despite all evidence to the contrary.
  2. Players making claims without evidence, and/or supporting their claims with irrelevant or faulty evidence.

I hope this was helpful, and that everyone has a pleasant day.
