My soon unfortunate end to the LoL world

I just started playing this wonderful game a few weeks back. I really picked up on it and enjoy it very much. People have asked me many times, "Why don't you play pvp?" and I said, "well, why don't I?" well, I tried. I have tried and tried.

A few things occur that have me completely unsettled.

First, the harassment. I have been harassed out of few games. Not just, "oh you suck" but literally these people were so god-awful rude, hateful and just miserable that I abandoned the game because I didn't feel like I should stick it out and keep reading the mean things being said. I LEFT a game- I inconvenienced other players because of my own teammates being ridiculous jerks. I was not going to stick it out another 20 minutes (5 - 10 mins into a game) just to report said player. I did that once- just roamed around the map- jungling until the end... and I got reported and this nice message saying how we all have our "off days".

Second, this "me me me" or "NO! you can't!" attitude has got me to the point of no return. I just tried to join a game. A guy calls top, then I call top. He says "NO, I'm top!" then another guys calls mid and 2 more call bot. The mid guy then says, "Don't even think about calling mid!" and the bots say, "we got bot!" Well that's fine, I don't want to freaking play anyway. The last time I said the heck with it and played the top or bot or wherever, I got harassed out of the game.

Now, I play the best I can and I play to learn and have fun. How am I suppose to learn the game when people get angry because I make a mistake? I get called, "stupid noob" or "dumb b-t-h" or "f--k you! you suck!" I can't learn if I don't play and its not like I'm trying to play a ranked game- I'm trying to play NORMAL PvP game. I had played nothing but bots until I felt I had my technique and what not down; it was time to move forward and play against real people instead of bots. Now, if I want to learn another Champion, I will go back to bots of course and play there.

I am at my wits end. I'm to the point of throwing in the towel and saying the heck with the money I have already spent on the game, the heck with even playing the game. Why should I play a game where I'm treated with such horrid insolence?

I am not perfect- I am not the worlds best player. I am still learning yet aren't we all?

How do I combat this poor sportsmanship?

Virtually every widely played PVP game I've ever seen has it's big share of raging, childish goons. It's unfortunate, but true. Use the mute option and report them after the game. The tribunal isn't perfect, but it's more than many other games have.

Learn to have a thick skin. Just keep playing (with them muted) and continue to get your butt kicked for a while. Going through that virtual blender and getting smoked game after game...try to learn from it. Continue to TRY to make plays. You will eventually get better. I rarely agree to a surrender because playing from behind is where I've learned the most. It's easy to roll over a bad team. It's WAY more satisfying to start learning how to come back and have an upset win.

I would also strongly suggest bot games until level 10. If beginner is WAY to easy, go up to intermediate. Bot games are a good place to learn how to last hit, harass, and set up basic ganks with your jungle.

Once you're ready to move to PVP, some people may not agree with me here, but play ARAM. ARAM is great, because it forces you to team fight almost constantly. This will improve reflexes and also force you to try new champs. ARAM is also heavily influenced by the randomness of champion select and the games are shorter, so you tend to not feel so bad about not doing well. While there are still people who rage in ARAMs, it's honestly not as bad as Summoners. And I'm not suggesting you play ARAM exclusively, but play them often.

A GIANT WALL 'O TEXT APPEARS!

Pryotra USES COLLEGE LEVEL READING SKILLS!

IT'S SUPER EFFECTIVE!

Ok, Let me begin my response by asking if you are greater than/less than 12. This will help me answer some of your concerns a bit more thoroughly, should you want further explanation.

Now, onto your points:

  1. League, like any online game, has a community with a "colorful" vocabulary. So reader beware. If someone is bothering you ingame, you can mute them by holding tab and clicking the speech bubble next to their name. Also, the "off days" message is a sign that people are repeatedly reporting you game after game. This is part of an ongoing initiative for better player behavior, led by Lyte (he's a scientisit). It generally means you need to take a small break to cool down. The last thing in this point I want to address at the moment is leaving. There really isn't an excuse for it, unless there is a real life emergency. If you are finding yourself getting frustrated, find a safe spot ingame and take a few deep breaths. That muting trick I mentioned earlier REALLY helps reduce the need for this, so feel free to use it liberally.

  2. Ingame champion select is a known problem, that Lyte and his team (Remember, scientist) are currently exploring ways to help player behavior. However, there are a few things you can do here to ease the tension. Firstly, learn the basics of each role. Top, mid, adc, support, jungle. Once you have a basic grasp, let your team know that you want a certain role. if you get it, cool! If not, at least you can practice another role without being completely lost. Bots are good for learning the fundementals of the roles, even if it gets silly on occasion. Watching streams and taking notice of all the little things they do that are different from what you do will help too.

  3. If you are being harrased ingame, you can mute them as I told you before. However, there is another thing you can do in the post game lobby. next to all the players names, there is a green and red button. The green button is called Honor, it allows you to anonymously thank another player for being a good sport, whether they helped you learn about the game, were generally friendly, or worked well together with you. You can even honor the enemy team, if they were graceful as an opponent. The red button is called Report. Clicking it will bring up a small window with a drop down box to choose a category that represents what they did that was offensive. There is also a text box to further explain if you think the closest category doesn't aptly describe what they did. Be aware though, that these systems can tell abuse, and while it will not stop you from using it, the effect that they will have will be diminished should you abuse either system.

I hoped that my wall of text helped you somehow. Have a wonderful day!

  1. Maybe they're miserable because one of their teammates is the reason they're losing. Not naming names, just throwing it out there.
  2. "I was not going to stick it out another 20 minutes" Why? When I see this, all I see is the hypocritical "me me me" behavior you're talking about.

3a. Those reports don't matter if the people in Tribunal can see that your actions in-game are in-line with the Summoner's Code.

3b. With that said, the objective of the game is to ultimately kill the enemy nexus. If what you say is true, that you just "roamed around the map jungling," that you couldn't put aside your feelings of disgust, annoyance, contempt, and/or disdain for the other players so that you could be conducive to winning, which is in the Summoner's Code, then you were just as bad as them. This is all just a big if though, of course.

  1. Harassed out of the game? What'd they do, talk your computer into standing up and running away? Damn, I'd pay for that kind of technology... Anyway, have you tried playing Normal Draft PvP? Pick order is generally respected there.

  2. I'll tell you why you deal with the jeers and the ridicule and the insults and the mocking laughter and the crying and the whining and the complaining and the moaning and the groaning and the mental retardation. Because winning despite that, winning despite ALL THE ODDS, is a feeling LIKE NO OTHER. I'll tell you why you play day after day, carving your own way out of blood, sweat, and tears. Because you have SEEN GREATNESS with your own two eyes. You have TASTED it. YOU FELT IT. It was like a feeling of absolute confidence. All these doubts and questions you have. Imagine you had none of them. Imagine if each and every statement you say, each and every action you take, each and every decision you make, were all absolutely right. Want to know what this feeling is called?

Winning

And that is why you deal with the jeers and the ridicule and the insults and the mocking laughter and the crying and the whining and the complaining and the moaning and the groaning and the mental retardation. Or die trying.

I find the best way to deal with the community is to add any really friendly people that you meet to your friends list. I just hit 290 friends and I rarely play a game with people I don't feel comfortable playing with. If you're still playing, send me a friend request, I'm on all the time.
