I have a question relating to MR/armour and how it affects abilities and AP/AD scaling.

So, when you run your mouse over an ability, such as Lux's ult, it'll say the damage is 300 (+72) if you have 72 AP. If the opponent buys MR and you Lux ult them, does the MR apply to the 300, the 72, or both of those numbers? Does it work the same way for an AD scaling ability and armour? How would armour and MR affect an ability that scales off of both AD and AP? (This is assuming that no true damage is involved)\

Sorry that was multiple questions haha

It applies to both numbers, but what it scales off of doesn't really matter. What you are looking for is the type of damage. Armor reduces physical damage and magic resist reduces magic damage.

Alright, lets tackle your questions one at a time.

  1. MR reduces the amount of magic damage done by an ability, and that damage is the combination of the base damage, and the damage added by the AP scaling.
  2. The same goes for armor and physical damage, except that damage can either be calculated by the base damage and total AD or base damage and Bonus AD, where total includes your innate ad and ad per level.
  3. For abilities that scale off of AD and AP, it is entirely dependent on what type of damage the ability specifies it does, either physical or magical. The one exception (as far as I know) is Corki, where his auto attacks and E do half physical, and half magical damage, where everything else applies, just on a smaller scale.

Hope that answers all your questions.

First off, AD and AP are not damage types. All the damage in the game are physical (mitigated by armor), magic (mitigated by MR), or true.

If you take a damage ability that scales, it will do the damage of certain type and the sum of base+scaling. For your Lux example, you'll do 372 magic damage. Then 372 magic damage will be mitigated based on your MR.

Ok, maybe I should explain a little better... A damaging ability does an amount of damage that is based on level and then it does extra damage based on the amount of AP/AD the person has. Example: Lux's ult could do 300 damage (This would be magic damage) and then it could do an additional 72 (that would be based on the fact that the Lux has 72 AP). My question is, if Lux's opponent bought MR, would the MR offer this person resistance to the 300 damage, the 72 damage, or all 372 damage? From what I gathered, the MR would help against all 372. What about an ability that scales off of AD? So, say an ability (one scaling from AD) does 100 damage and then an additional 52 (due to the amount of AD the champion has). The 52 damage would be physical, but would the 100 be as well? From what I gathered, I think the answer is yes. Then, kind of like I asked before, would an opponents armour reduce the 52, the 100, or all 152 damage? And then, what if there was an ability that did 100 damage or something plus magic damage based on AP, plus physical damage based on AD, what would the 100 be? Physical damage, magic damage? Would it just depend on the champion?

Note: The AD example, I just made up the numbers. I play more AP champs than AD, and so I couldn't think of real numbers off the top of my head.
