Riot, can we please have champion portraits as summoner icons?

KingOfDjibouti·12/3/2014, 8:20:55 PM·165 votes·4,326 views

I can have a champion's portrait as my username flair on Reddit's r/leagueoflegends. Why can we not have it in the actual game? Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it just a matter of cropping some .jpeg files just like this? Braum

Maybe put them in the League store and buy them for IP (RP would be overkill), or receive them based on how many games you've played as that champion (sort of like the team builder icons), so there is a sense of "mastery" with the champion?

Also, while we're at it - people are paying real money to buy skins for these champs too; I say give summoner icons of the skin portraits for purchased skins.

P.S. Why can't in-game portraits on the mini-map adjust with skins?

P.S. Why can't in-game portraits on the mini-map adjust with skins?

Clarity of gameplay. Players need to be able to tell who is where at a glance and seeing a different face is likely to cause players to misread or just not recognize a champion, especially if the skin is uncommon.

Receive them based on how many games you've played as that champion

I like this idea. Riot can do it like one a week to promote an underplayed champion.

I believe the reason is that during loading screen, it'd be weird to see the splash of one champ above the portrait of another.

This is a really cool idea but I am actually against it.

I think it might be confusing.

I am, however, upvoting you and bumping as it is a really cool idea which deserves discussion.

why are there only 6 upvotes? c'mon people let's make this happen.

All of this is a cool idea excluding the lack of clarity involved in changing portraits on the mini map to skin portraits.

To be honest... While this is something I have wanted for the longest time; I would only want this to be in the game if something like this were implemented:

  • Icon exist (duh)
  • You unlock it by earning it. NOT BUY IT with either RP/IP.
  • To unlock it, you have to play ... let's say this: 100 games WON as that champion = Classic splash art. 500 games WON as that champion = All skins of that champ picture unlocked.

For example, my favorite champ is Lulu, and have PLAYED about 500 games as her. I've definitely won over 100 games as her so I would unlock her Lulu splash picture to use as an icon. However, I've won less than 500 games with her (I've barely won 500 games combined with ranked, aram, and normals.. normals which I main), so I wouldn't have her skin pictures unlocked.

Why this system would be best overall; it'll be unique to have to say "hey, he or she are probably great with this champ OR he or she is very good with this champ" ... where as just buying them is pointless.

Deserves a redsponce to this idea. I mean, if they ever get here it's either going to be: "Great idea!" and then they'll leave and forget forever or they'll disapoint us by telliing us it'll waste too many ressources or something.

This is not something we are looking into for the future. But believe me when I tell you that you really don't want this anyways.

I completely support this idea.

idl112/4/2014, 10:01:21 PM1 votes

For godsakes yes. I will crop them for you Riot, you don't even have to do it!

TTGOz12/4/2014, 10:14:28 PM1 votes

IP Paid Icons that rotate once a week .

Or you get a free icon for your most played Champion .

Bresn12/4/2014, 10:16:21 PM1 votes

No, only the one placed next to your items and slot. So it's personal. Also make the Scoreboard to Skin Champion

Also, why does Pulsefire get this? It appears this THIRTY DOLLAR skin is using that as a unfair, overpriced selling point.

Upvote so a Rioter can respond.

i support everything u say except for ghanging in game icons. it would be WAY too confusing to some new players.

Maximum Zilean12/3/2014, 10:00:03 PM1 votes

Even do them for skins. Then i'd be sold on this idea. Would love a groovy zilean icon.

Blackthunder52212/4/2014, 1:39:46 AM1 votes

I think this is a great idea.

IMightBeYourDad12/4/2014, 1:42:19 AM1 votes

Maybe do them for both ip and rp (really low amounts of rp that way people could finally find a way to spend that few rp they have left. I also think they should be able to be earned. Maybe a perfect game with said champion? great idea make it happen Riot!!!!XD

Sure, $5 a pop.

I agree, League needs a "challenges" section were you have to earn and unlock unique icons and banners. Similar to call of duty with their "Tittles & Emblems".

ßaechu12/4/2014, 5:25:29 AM1 votes

I agree with this because I've played on the Chinese servers, and they have summoner icons of chibi champions and they are all free. I think it would be a good idea to do this on the other servers as well because it would be really cool.Teemo

do it pleas rito

A Bad Ahri12/4/2014, 12:56:03 PM1 votes

I would love it based on how many you've played as that champ. Not only would you have a nice icon, but people would know that you are aware of how to play that champ (or have at least played them a lot). I would enjoy skins too, but that seems like it'd be a bit much.
Cassiopeia Mains would be feared. Mordekaiser

Jolly Rogered12/5/2014, 5:32:40 PM

Maybe it doesn't necessarily have to be the champs splash pic but maybe some type of art that is related to a specific champ.

For example, I play rengar a lot. If you play him enough successfully you can get an icon that involves his eyes peering through some bushes or his bone tooth necklace. Something like this.
