A Way to Make Lore More Concise for League of Legends
(If this post needs a move to an appropriate board, please move it there)
I've always been a fan of lore in video games, and though I wasn't as interested in League's lore at first, it was the entire world of potential behind it that fascinated me; the endless possibilities of character interactions drew me in.
The lore retcon destroyed that. Now, there is very little reason for a roster of characters that is as diverse as this one to interact outside of the retconned Institute of War. With a roster of characters that seemingly exist to live in their own little bubble within a massive world, the utter lack of interpersonal character interaction in a world this massive is appalling, to be honest.
During the past few weeks, I've been playing MMORPGs. And if there is one thing I've learned from playing MMOs, it is that the lore is absolutely critical to an MMO. The backstory drives the main story forward. The main story drives the action forward. The action drives the player forward. The cycle repeats as the player continues to drive the story forward. Without concise lore, you, the player acting as the character, are left confused as to WHY you are doing things.
Thus, the point I've been getting at in my post:
Riot, in order to make the lore of League of Legends possess more meaning and perhaps make some sort of sense, try making an MMORPG based on the MOBA. Create the world of Valoran from the ground-up, and make it a realm for the players to explore.
But why an MMORPG exactly? Two things:
-
The gameplay Let's be honest, playing a MOBA can get repetitive when, at the end of the day, all you're really doing is right-clicking, and hitting the same four letters on a keyboard (with an occasional numbered key for those with item actives). An MMO with decent to appropriate levels of gameplay depth will allow you to enjoy stunning graphics that accompany highly dynamic combat. Tera Online is a great example of this, as it uses what is called "kinaesthetic mimicry" - the play of simulation involving a player's sense of touch of motion. You feel the combat flow as you see it happen on the screen; this is why Tera's combat system is highly appealing, and why future MMO releases have been emulating this, with their own twists (Blade & Soul, for example, with martial arts, spiritual arts.) By implementing a dynamic combat system into a world like Valoran, you can begin to feel the impact behind a character's blows. If your character were to knock over an enemy with their weapon, for example, just imagine the force of a blow from a Voidling. You begin to add perspective to the world, just through its combat.

The Lore The backstory of an MMO must be set in stone before the main plot can even be formulated - without the background, you have no foundation for the game's main events. And without the main story, you have no real purpose for your gameplay if you don't know exactly why you're using those cool, flashy moves. If Riot were to make an MMO based off League of Legends, they will essentially be forced into creating a concrete backstory that drives the plot forward - one that is preferably not half-assed, in my opinion (coughnarrativeteamcough).
Summary:
In conclusion, if Riot were to develop an MMORPG (they could, to be honest - they have the tools and money for it), and put forward a fair amount of effort not only into the gameplay but also into the story (the _whole _ story, not just individual characters), I believe they can create a world that is large enough to accommodate the many diverse characters of the League of Legends.
