What really kills the love of the game...

I would like to start off by saying that I love League of Legends. It is not perfect—as no game really is. It is not balanced there is always something OP or something that is broken. That is what comes along with a game that continuously has work done on it. I love the fact that it is free to play because I end up spending more than a subscription on skins….. I appreciate that there are always new champions under development and that every once in a while an old nerfed favorite comes out of the woodwork and reignites interest in players.

There is one thing that is very broken though… beyond excuse, beyond reason. This community is the most toxic of any game I have ever played. I have tried to get some of my friends to come to the game just to have them leave because people were so mean to them EVEN IN BOT GAMES that they uninstalled the game. There is no sportsmanship—not even on your own team. I had a list of examples I do not feel the need to include now because they have all been said before. Consequences, a ban, a spanking, a stern email…. These are not getting to the problem. The problem is that many players are not MOTIVATED to behave in a sportsmanlike manner.

There are two common ways to prompt motivation. One is by positive reinforcement. The honor system, ranked rewards, community event rewards all could be considered positive reinforcement. They are very few and far between to be very effective. These are also a bandaid… Should you have to reward people for being decent human beings? No, but it would be nice. It’s an option.

The other type of motivation is intrinsic. It comes from within. Creating events like the pool party event in which the entire global community was working toward something together was a stellar way to get GOOD games. These were games in which the other team was losing and would ask “Are you a 5 man?” “Ok, GG FOR MUNDO” and such. It was positive. People made more friends. People had a purpose to work together. These types of events are not just motivating to players who otherwise might have negative behavior—but they also are motivating to those players that are polite and courteous.

Yes, part of this needs to be the community stepping up and acting like the community it really should be… But, it would be really be helpful for the game to foster this and create ways to bring the community together.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.Rammus

So true! Like when they gifted skins to non-leavers last year, I was really excited when I got my skin and it motivated me to manage time better so I could finish more games. A system that would be really cool to me is monthly rewards for positive play. At the end (or beginning) of every month, players would receive some kind of points for every game they didn't leave, and more points for Honors and the like. Then, they could redeem them (or just be gifted) for some kind of item. It would probably just be mystery skins or champions.

+5 points for completed game +2 points for Friendly or Helpful +1 point for Honorable Opponent or Teamwork -12 points for left game

Mystery Icon - 80 Mystery Champion - 120 Mystery Ward - 150 Mystery Skin - 200

The system doesn't have to be so steep, but something like this. I didn't put in Reports because there is so much shit that can go on with that.

There are 1000 other posts like this, riot isnt going to do anything about this, obviously. If your friends cant handle someone yelling at them then oh well, thats just how this game and its community is.
