This thread is dedicated to Riot for finally allowing players spectate a friend's custom game.

Before patch the way friend spectating worked was like this:

LeeSin: I wanna watch my friends play customs!

  1. If you look at your friends list, and you see one of your friends (mine is Aeyoodle for this example) with the status "In Game", you can right click on their name.
  2. The last entry on the right click menu is the option to "Spectate Game". If the selection is greyed out, then you know that they're in a custom or bot game, if the selection is not greyed out, then you know that they're in a normal or ranked game.

For some reason, I was able to spectate my Aeyoodle's custom game without being in the custom lobby spectator slot. I later had Aeyoodle start a custom game and I was also able to spectate that after the game had started via the friend list.

I think this function is really great, because now I can record my high school tournament matches at any point in the game using the friends list and use camera rotation software on the recording to do cool stuff like making montages. Zed

The only downside is that you won't be able to tell whether your friend is in a custom or a matchmade game using the right click menu. summoner 3 Oh darn! JK But if he's your friend you may as well just ask him what he's playing xD Also Riot servers will be more crowded with spectators watching custom games now. Just a speculation

And why shouldn't this be a feature? It's been requested before and just seems like something natural to have in the game anyway. So once again, thank you Riot for allowing us to watch our friends' LAN parties summoner 31 in specmode~~~!

Custom games have been spectate-able (not even a word, but whatever) for as long as I've been playing, since about Thresh's release. However, it's also been optional for all that time - when the owner creates the game, they have the option of allowing or preventing spectators.
