Smite vs LoL

I've been getting a few games in on Smite recently and there are quite a few things I like about Smite that isn't implemented in LoL as well as there being things in LoL that just feel better than Smite.

Below, I'll list the pros of Smite and LoL that the opposite MoBA fails to include.

Smite Pros:

  • ** Sandbox Mode: **A mode under the guise of "Jungle Practice" that allows players to try gods before they buy them, try builds with a near limitless amount of gold, take on jungle camps, choose their level at will, practice lane farming and take on an AI opponent (granted, it's always Ra).

  • Surrendering at 10 minutes: While most people won't find this option to be popular, it's one of the main reasons I keep going back to Smite. It's not because I want to forfeit every game before the 20 minute mark so much as it alleviates the stress of knowing that if the timer hasn't hit "20:00" yet, this "ROFL Stomp" that I'm having to put up with will last much longer. Knowing that I have the option to opt out of the game just as it's starting to go down-hill and not once it hits rock bottom makes me actually enjoy matches. Even the lost ones.

  • Voice Packs: Though I don't see much of a way to implement this in LoL, Voice Packs seem to add to the feeling of the god and allows one to more accurately tell people what you're thinking in an informative and sometimes annoying fashion (looking at you, Cupid Voice Pack users).

  • Customizable Loading Screen: While those who have made it to Silver, Gold, Plat, Diamond, ect. get to have a cool border around their loading screen, Smite offers choices that even the little guys can enjoy. As of right now, I've only seen the holiday loading screen that rains snow down on your god's splash art. It's small, but it's nice.

  • Announcer Pack: As cool as it is to hear the stock announcer's voice, sometimes you want to switch it up and feel like you are making the game your own. Announcer Packs sometimes adds to the hilarity of the match and really livens things up a bit. Once again, small, but effective.

  • Mode of the Day: While LoL's featured game modes are nice, they are few and far between. In Smite, I have played more "Featured Game Modes" in one week than I have since the beginning of the concept in LoL. I've even played Smite's version of "URF" twice within the span of 2 weeks.

  • Esports gives back: In LoL, Esports just felt like this thing that we were almost inclined to watch for almost no reason outside of "Because I want to" while in Smite, Esports has given Hi Rez Studios a reason to kick it in gear and start making some new skins and offer some pretty good gear in the hopes of raising money for their Esports event. Who are these teams I'm supporting? Heck if I know, but these deals are insanely good!

LoL Pros:

  • More game altering characters: As much as I love the gods in Smite, it has never felt like any of the gods change up gameplay. Every marksman will just output damage at your face, every tank will hug you until they can CC you, every jungler will jump in, burst you down and jump out. There's not much to look at and sometimes I end up building against gods just based on their classes and not who they are.

  • Jungle is easier to live in: In Smite, I found it hard to jungle without the need of entering a lane for a while just to stay up to speed. The jungler in LoL offers for a much more "livable" area that allows for me to stay in until I'm needed.

  • More defining items: While the items in Smite are nice, they don't really define a character's build as much as it does in LoL. I've never once thought to myself "Oooo, what would happen if I combined these two items?" in Smite, but in LoL, Shiv and Hurricane, Frozen Mallet and Phage, 5 RoAs. Tons of Fun.

  • More builds left to the imagination: In Smite, my hand is slapped any time I want to build an Physical Damage item on a Magical Damage character due to the availability of said Physical Damage items being taken away. So, if I want to try any crazy "out of the meta" builds, I'm SoL.

  • No hybrid characters: As mentioned previously, you can't build Physical Damage items on a Magical Damage character. This is mostly due to everything in a god's kit being either Physical Damage or Magical Damage. You never get a mix of both and, as such, never get to make crazy builds to cheese one part of your kit or the other.

  • Team Builder: This mode makes for an interesting system when you're given the ability to pick and choose your team. While you can't get a gauge on your team members that easily in the TB lobby, you can usually tell where your team composition is lacking and pick accordingly.

Anyways, those are just my two cents about the comparison between LoL and Smite.

While LoL has some of my favorite characters and items, Smite seems to make me feel more welcome and in control of the game.

What are your opinions summoners?
