What do the Summoner icons mean and where do they come from?

I do know where they come from, but wouldn't it be nice if Riot would add a tool-tip to the icons when you're scrolling through them on your profile? Just to explain how you got them, cause I honestly don't know where I got half my icons from.

Personally I'd like to get rid of all the "free ones" I got when starting the account. They don't say anything about my time in league other than the season I started in, which has lame icons. Now they are just noise.
