So, what is the idea behind champion and summoner?

So, I just started thinking about this and I find it sort of weird.

We as the summoners, choose a champion. They say hi or something like before we lock in. But, are we just like grabbing them from wherever they are in the world? Secondly, when we are playing the game. Are we playing as the champion, or are we a summoner who is basically stealing our champion's ability to think and act? If so, isn't that kind of like possession or something?

Just a weird thought that came to mind. I would appreciate answers.

It's "old lore". Around the time of Azir launch, they changed the entire universe of LoL. Not sure if it's in the video, but I enjoy typing anyway, so...

Old lore: You play as a "summoner". You summon strong warriors from throughout the world to fight on Summoner's Rift for you. There's a variety of reasons to do so, but most of them relate to political power and/or searching for someone else that is strong enough that he's probably in Summoner's Rift too.

New lore: Normal video game lore. These people all exist in their own parts of the world and have their own independent stories. They just fight on the Rift the same way Mario, Link, Pikachu, and Fox fight each other in Super Smash Bros.

Most references to the old lore have been removed, but there are some aspects that are sort of creepy like you mentioned. There are some exceptions (like maybe Sona VO?) that do directly reference non-canon stuff.
