Sona's ability names could use an update
Many of Sona's ability names aren't very good. I earned a Superior at a regional music festival so I'm pretty much an authority on music.
1. Current names:
Passive: Power Chord Power Chord Q: Staccato Power Chord W: Diminuendo Power Chord E: Tempo Q: Hymn of Valor W: Aria of Perseverance E: Song of Celerity R: Crescendo
2. What's wrong with them:
Passive: Power Chord -The name itself isn't too bad, since power implies strength, and Sona's next attack is stronger. The problem is that the musical definition of a power chord is just a two-note chord, a tonic and dominant: for example, C and G in the key of C. It doesn't actually mean a chord that's stronger or more powerful than any other. In fact, compared to a typical three-note chord, you're removing the third. Perhaps you were comparing it to a single note? If so, respect. Power Chord Q: Staccato -Staccato literally means "separated." I don't see what that has to do with the spell's effect: dealing additional damage. Power Chord W: Diminuendo -Diminuendo means "growing softer," but the enemy's damage is immediately softer. Not the worst name, but there's room for improvement. Power Chord E: Tempo -Just tempo? "Time" or "rate of speed"? That alone doesn't imply that you're slowing your enemy down. There's a plethora of musical terms that actually mean slow, so there's no need to stick with the generic word for time. Q: Hymn of Valor W: Aria of Perseverance E: Song of Celerity -These are okay, but they sound more like Castlevania subtitles than League of Legends abilities. Moreover, why is the hymn the one doing damage? I would think the hymn would be the heal. And then "Song of Celerity" makes it sound as if you ran out of synonyms for "song" after just two. Google provides these options: strain, ditty, melody, tune, anthem, hymn (good job), chantey, ballad, and aria (good job again). Thesaurus.com adds canticle, carol, chorus, lullaby, opera, psalm, and theme; among others. But wait--Sona doesn't even sing, so it makes little sense to have names that imply vocals. Instrumental options would include bolero, capriccio, concerto, dirge, farandole, humoresque, invention (think Bach), leitmotif, march, melody, rhapsody, rondo, sonata, symphony, and tarantella. Granted, Konami's taken most of the good ones. R: Crescendo -Sorry, but Sona's ult has the worst name of her kit. Crescendo means "growing louder," but Sona's ult is sudden. If anything, "Forte" or "Fortissimo" ("strong" / "very strong") would be immediately better. I even like Finale, as "final" and "ultimate" are synonyms, but what we really want is a name that has something to do with stunning or dancing.
3. Better names, option 1:
Passive: Power Chord Power Chord Q: Sforzando Power Chord W: Sotto Voce Power Chord E: Ritenuto Q: Marcato W: Sostenuto E: Vivace R: Caesura
4. Explanations, option 1:
Passive: Power Chord (No change) -I can live with this one. When compared to a single note, the name makes sense. Power Chord Q: Sforzando -Sforzando: A sudden strong accent. Rinforzando and marcato are some other good options. Power Chord W: Sotto Voce -Sotto voce: underneath the main voice--like a whisper. Tacet, subito piano or even just piano are good too. Mezzo piano (kind of soft) would be hilariously accurate, because the debuff is just a 20% damage reduction. Power Chord E: Ritenuto -Ritenuto: immediately slower. It's perfect. Largo, adagio, lento, larghetto, grave, or andante are okay too, if you prefer. Ritardando is seen more often in music, but that means gradually growing slower, like Nasus's W. Q: Marcato -Marcato: Sharply accented. Bravura and brioso are good too. W: Sostenuto -Sostenuto: Sustained. This ability is what makes Sona a sustain-type support. Tenuto alone is pretty good, and matches the syllable count of Marcato and Vivace. E: Vivace -Vivace: Lively or up-tempo. Allegro, presto, and accelerando are good too. R: Caesura -Better known to beginners as a "grand pause" or "railroad tracks," a caesura is a complete break in sound. The stun of Sona's ult is like a break--a dance break.
5. Better names, option 2:
Passive: Accent Power Chord Q: Marcato Power Chord W: Sordina Power Chord E: Tenuto Q: Cosmic Anthem W: Soothing Lullaby E: Lively Tarantella R: Fermata
6. Explanations, option 2:
Passive: Accent -Stronger than a typical note. The next three follow the theme. Power Chord Q: Marcato -Marcato: A marked accent. Noted in music as ^ above or below a note. Power Chord W: Sordina -Sordina means mute. When you mute an instrument, it gets quieter. Also, the first and last two letters of the word spell "Sona." Noted in music as + above or below a note. Power Chord E: Tenuto -Tenuto: Held. Not the best name, but it fits the accent theme and Sona "holds" her enemy in check by slowing him or her. Noted in music as – above or below a note. Q: Cosmic Anthem -Or just Anthem, or just March. Besides being a wicked sick band name, Cosmic Anthem sounds like a really strong move. Heroic Anthem would work too. W: Soothing Lullaby -Or just Lullaby. Sleeping in a tent or at an inn heals you in many RPGs, so a lullaby seems like a good name for a heal. E: Lively Tarantella -Or Fervent Tarantella, or just Tarantella. A tarantella is a dance to a quick tempo. R: Fermata -Sometimes called a "bird's eye," A fermata is a held note. Sona's ult holds her enemies in place.
tl, dr: Sona's ability names don't really make sense. Change them to Power Chord (Sforzando, Sotto Voce, Ritenuto), Marcato, Sostenuto, Vivace, and Caesura; or something better.
