Rewards for positive behaviours @Lyte
TLDR: The player behavior team made a post explaining a new rewards for positive behavior system; there have been no rewards for positive behavior in Season 5 (which we're halfway through); if the rewards for positive behavior are this infrequent, everyone will forget the system even exists, and it will change nothing.
At the end of Season 4, players who had not been banned that season were all rewarded with a mystery skin. That was awesome. It really felt like our positive behavior was appreciated, and I imagine it made some players prone to negative behavior reconsider their behavior.
Shortly thereafter, Lyte made a post titled "Player Behavior Design Values: Reward" (link: http://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/news/game-updates/player-behavior/player-behavior-design-values-reward ). In this post, Lyte says that they will "continue to surprise players once in awhile for their positive behavior", and that "it’ll be possible for players to earn the next surprise so long as they've been positive since the last surprise was awarded". Again, awesome! Negative players will have an extra incentive to reform.
But there's one problem: we're halfway through the season, and this hasn't happened.
For positive players, this means that they've been promised a reward they've never received. Though they'll still stay positive players, it feels bad. For neutral players, this means that the incentive they were supposed to have to "put in that extra effort in a few more games to get the next surprise" is not there. For negative players, these rewards were supposed to hopefully "encourage a few to change their ways". Unfortunately, since there's been none of these rewards for positive behavior, there's been no reset for the negative players. In my opinion, this is the most disappointing thing. I really liked that the system was set up so that, if a negative player decides to improve their behavior, there will be a moment where they get some reward, however small, that says "hey, thanks for improving your behavior, we're glad you're here."
I understand that these rewards have to be given out at unpredictable times so that "Because players aren't sure what the next reward is (or when it is), players will strive to be sportsmanlike in a larger range of games to try to get all the surprises." But if it's so infrequent that everyone forgets about it, the system will change nothing.
