[Debate] [Guide Resource] Toxicity, what can -WE- do?
Hello and welcome to my weekly [Debate] post. In this post series I outline a subject with LoL, and encourage people to post their own opinions and views about the subject. I hope to spark intelligent, civil and open-minded debate amongst the community. Just in case you don’t know how to do debate properly,
#####Here are the guidelines
- Don't dismiss anyone's opinions, opinions are never wrong, you just disagree with them.
- You are free to disagree with someone always, but always do your best to explain why.
- Don't get emotional, hopefully we're all adults here, keep it in 'debate' mode. No catfights allowed.
- Feel free to disagree with my OP as well! I love feedback, but this is a debate thread, I'll respond!
- There is a comment reply cap! You only have a few tries to rebuttle and argue a point, so make them count!
- Examples and hypothetical situations are great ways to communicate ideas and critiques, but remember naming and shaming is not tolerated anywhere on the forums. Feel free to simply substitute the name with PlayerX or something along those lines!
#Toxicity, what can WE do?
##The true question
It’s a problem we’ve all had to deal with at least once, and most can’t seem to stop having. A match or other form of League experience is ruined due to toxic behavior. This can happen in game, in the forums, over chat, anywhere where one player can get in contact with another. And it gets a bit more complicated, as there is never truly only one side to any contact like this. As such, this I much more than a simple “punish the toxic guy” thing. So we have a problem within a problem here. What can truly be done, by us the players, to reduce negative player behavior here? That is the real question I want to focus on today.
##Defining a ‘solution’
Behavior can be influenced by surroundings, positive/negative reinforcement, cultural traits, experiences, social engineering and many other factors. So in this discussion I want to move away from the classic “Riot do something about this” mentality and point to the people who can do the most about this behavior. The community itself.
Let me be clear here, I do not want to hear a single thing about what Riot can do, that is not within the scope of the discussion here. Keep it within what you as a player can do. This can be from individual circumstances and examples to movements and initiatives.
Keep in mind as well, that this is a Debate thread, so you don’t have to propose anything grand but you can do other things as well, like further define the problem or critique a solution. Point out obstacles, complicated ‘gray areas’, examples where an easy solution seems impossible, there is plenty you can do.
##Focus Points
###---Identification
#####What is ‘toxic’?
Check out this Debate to see what this problem means. Everyone’s tolerance and expectation of ‘toxic’ behavior is different. Even people in the same example may see it differently, like the aggressor not considering his behavior toxic but the receiver does. This happens much more often than you would think.
###---Initiation
#####Who started it?
Whoever starts the contact is the Initiator. And just like teamfights there are good initiates and bad ones, and this doesn’t just mean the behavior side of it. Someone trying to diffuse a situation can spark an explosion, he initiated badly. A frustrated player could call someone out for a legitimate reason, but phrase very poorly (OMG WTF), he initiated poorly. What can be done to help out our fellow summoners to initiate better behaviorally?
###---Sensitivity/Interpretation
#####Was it actually toxic?
This is a common problem, more common than I think most realize. Sensitivity in a general sense is not a bad thing, but when it causes mis-interpretation (i.e. finding ‘toxic’ behavior where there is none) it can be an issue. The most common example is someone having a bad game, and someone comes in to offer friendly advice, and the receiver takes that as mocking or derogatory. 'Sparks' like this are an easy thing to address in the fight against toxic behavior, and recognizing what can set people off can prevent tirades, on both ends of this equation.
###---Acceptance/Society #####"That's just how it is" We have a society here in the League community. We have our own jokes, our own terms, our own ups and downs and our own shared problems. We have other things that come along with as well, chiefly accepted versus unaccepted behavior. Think about it, what can you do (talk about) here that in another context would be seen as unaccepted behavior? Bashing on bronzies is bullying, immediately raging about changes without trying them is immature, and trying something new (Lissandra Jungle, Ezreal Support, etc.) is seen as lack of knowledge. Am I saying everyone does this? No. But do you agree this has become a societal normal? Even if you don’t do it and you disagree with it, would you feel supported if you spoke out against it? Do you feel like you’re going to be ridiculed when you raise an unpopular opinion like “I like the balance changes”? I'm happy if you do, but as part of a sub-culture, each individual player has a role in shaping what is accepted and encouraged behavior wise. Can you say you're content with how the average player deals with negative behavior in your experience?
###---Lack of Thought
#####"How was I supposed to know?"
Let's be clear here people, common sense is a very important life skill. Especially when it comes to talking and communicating. League is an online game, and is thus open to every kind of people under the sun. Something that is funny among your friends may be horribly insulting to another person with a different background, and ignorance does not excuse the act of saying it. Intentional or not an insult is an insult, and recognizing that is key to communicating with people. Because that is what this all about, communicating with people properly so you can accomplish the goal of enjoying a game and working together.
Feel free to include more if you think of any.
