Mage supports fall behind too easily

I find, as a main support player, that recently the meta has shifted to the use of tanky supports, with the newer ADCs becoming stronger. I find that as a result, mage supports such as Janna and Nami have become very difficult to match if the opposing player's support is a Blitzcrank or a Thresh. Not only that, but once you fall behind, there is no way to catch up because your champ is too weak to poke forward, and staying behind means less experience.

Fortunately, in games where I do not fall behind early, I generally gather about 10-15 assists in the latter stages of the game. However if I should ever fall behind more than 1 level from the opposing pair, bot starts to really slide and ganks don't work too well against tankier supports.

What I am asking is does anyone agree that the viability of mage supports has fallen a shade? And if so, what changes do you think should be made? I personally would suggest an early game item that gives 15~ ability power and 5% cooldown reduction (cost ~400 gold)

I will call these "mage" supports "utility" supports. I consider "mage" supports champions such as Annie, Fiddlesticks, Morgana, etc.

I think they have become much more situational than before. I used to be able to pick Nami every game. Now she has some hard counters I really want to avoid.

However:

I have seen Nami make some sick plays on a team that didn't have much CC.

I have seen Janna make a huge play with her ult which turned the tide of the team fight.

I have seen Sona pull off amazing heals.

I have seen Soraka silence ults which cripple apcs.

I do agree that if you fall behind, it is hard to catch up. However, you have to understand that if the Blitz or Thresh or an unorthodox support falls behind on the other team, they fall WAY off.

I think overall, these utility champions have become more fun. They are harder to play and require perfect timing. But man, is it ever rewarding when you pull off that epic play.

The problem is not normally the supports choice, but the ADC choices in the game. Some ADC's benefit differently from different style supports to make complete use of their power. Tanky supports like Taric or Leona are best used with a champion like Jinx or Vayne because they lock down champions and utilize auto-attacks as their primary means of damage to get kills. But if you look at someone like Corki, they need a healer more like Nami, or Sona, because hes got nice poke and uses his Gatling gun ability to push out damage which does not require alot of lockdown (Also he has an escape so hes an in and out champ).

It really just comes down to the choice of ADC and which one will complement their abilities more. I love a Leona and Jinx combo because Leona's stuns complement Jinx. But with Caitlyn , you just need to sit back and poke which makes a healer like Sona a necessity for me. Just my two cents
