What's with the bias against players who play the meta?

It seems like calling someone a FoTM player is an insult nowadays... Some people enjoy climbing as fast as possible, not being tied down and dedicated to one champ, handicapping themselves for no reason.

It's not the meta that we have an issue with. It's the players that allow their choice of champion to be dictated almost solely by meta shifts and current (perceived) "OP" champions, without any attempt to play champions that might actually fit their preferred playstyle.

There's no dedication to the game with that strategy. It's merely dedication to winning.

I feel like a lot of this judgement is against people who do things like seeing a champion played in LCS or worlds or whatever, and then assuming it's good and "meta" and playing it. A lot of these champions are not necessarily exceptional, but are comp-based. Especially in lower MMR, where people don't have a good grasp on comps and what makes a champion "good", you'd see a lot of people picking and banning picks like Skarner, and a lot of people flaming them for just picking according to "meta."

FoTm player's don't rely on skill. They rely on the champion and abuse only the strong ones. You don't need to main one person, but you shouldnt just switch every patch because X champ got nerfed.

It may have something to do with them hopping onto flavor of the month champions and feeding because they have handicapped themselves by using a champion they don't have experience on, which ruins the enjoyment for a lot of people, especially the ones who enjoy climbing fast.

It may also have to do with those FoTM guys who think whatever is popular are the good champions and even deride others for playing that "shit champion" who just must be bad because not everyone is playing them. That is also a possibility.

Because video games are meant to be played for fun -- though today's generation seems to have forgotten that, and developers perpetuate it by coddling the lowest common denominator. When people treat video games like some super huge competition or "sport," it kind of ruins the magic of what gaming once was. A friendly, fun competition is fine, but people are out for blood these days, and it kind of makes me sad.

So why do I freak out? Because people aren't willing to play for fun anymore. Instead, they play to win and nothing else.
