In all honesty, my dream job is probably working for them. I'm turning 19 later this year, so I've got plenty of time to prepare and get degrees and all that, but I'm not really sure what specifically I need?

As of right now I'm a certified A+ and Network+ technician, but I got those during my high school career in 2014. (No one wanted to hire a 17 year old techie when I graduated, go figure) I also do artwork and such, but I'm doubtful that it would be considered good enough for them, since all I really do are cutesy animals.

Not to mention I'm no where near Cali. Michigan yay.

/sigh

Anyone else ever have these kinds of thoughts? Or any sort of insight for me?

If you're really open to anything I have found that programmers and artists are nearly always in demand in the game industry. Programming nearly always requires a computer science degree to really have the foundations you need. It's less important in art, but you have to be really, really good to get by just on 2D non-digital art skills these days, so an education there to learn the software is also probably a good idea. There are aspects of video game art that aren't as dependent on how well you can draw a monster or hero: say animation or tech art.

Riot, like many studios, hires a wide variety of people necessary to keep the business running that aren't strictly speaking working on game development. We have massive IT needs. We host events. We have finance and legal departments. Generally all of those positions require a good education as well. At Riot in particular, you'd need to be a gamer to really fit into the culture. That might not be the case at every game studio... though you may also want to ask that studio why that isn't the case. :)

It can be hard to break into this industry with no experience. Internships are a great source of experience, though those can be hard to snag as well. These days it's easier than ever to work on an independent or small team game project with all of the free engines and tools floating around. In terms of game design, since that is the field I am most qualified to speak about, we look for people who can finish projects more than people who have great ideas.

Our studio is headquartered in LA, though we do have other offices. We are able to relocate people for a lot of the kinds of positions that it sounds like you'd be interested in. Southern California, Washington state, Texas and a few spots on the East Coast are clusters of game development within the US.

Also remember that making games isn't the same thing as loving to play games. There is a ton of overlap of course, and while I wouldn't trade this career for anything personally, it is very hard work. Not every person who loves great restaurants would really enjoy being a chef. :)

The good news is that this industry is still growing and most of the people I have known who really wanted to get into making games were eventually able to do so.

Best of luck!

The certs probably won't help you. If you feel your art isn't up to par then it likely isn't.

If you are good at 3d math and logic those skills will always be in demand. Get a bachelors in computer science with a minor in math. Look for internships with local computer companies (even if they aren't gaming companies.) (Many companies require a degree as a weeding method... unless the person is an obvious superstar.)

Nearing graduation, start shipping resumes and code samples.

Good luck,.

"All I really do are cutesy animals" If you keep on adding detail into the same picture it could go up to Riot's splash art standards! Think of Fizz, a cartoony frog-like fish animal. You could probably get into that kind of thing.

Figure out what you want to do for them. Then go to the forum most relevent for that discipline and make a name for yourself as a positive member of the community.

While you're doing that, work on a portfolio, so to speak. Do things relating to that field... if it's art, create fanart, do skin concepts, etc. If it's programming, make stuff - be it addons, games, etc... make something. If it's web design, create web tools and websites. Have things that you can SHOW them to show that you know what you're doing. And then, once you have a portfolio and any relevent certifications/degrees... apply once there's an opening. Riot's very picky.

Good job sir for managing to grab A+ and Network+ (got mine earlier this year). It helps when finding a job, and when it comes to IT, the more the merrier.

I will say, that fortunately IT is something you barely need to specialize in by company, unless they have specialized software you need to work in (you can work IT at a bank for example, you can work IT damn well anywhere). Keep acquiring certifications when you can.

As for art, just build your portfolio. Make stuff you're proud of, and make it as awesome as possible. Put about 15-20 of that together, and you should be set.

I dont think rito is a company you should work for in long term league of legends wont be around forever

My personal thought is that they might be looking for IT to help be on staff for the Northern Bridge. http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/help-support/0hVNFnPH-na-server-roadmap-update-pops-peering-and-the-north-bridge

Chicago's not too far away from home. I don't know much of the details for who maintains the PoPs, but it could be worth looking into.
