How to deal with the trolls, jerks, and AFKs

So, I have a really toxic friend, and he was playing some GTAV. Well, he texted me about 30 minutes ago, saying that he was now a "bad sport" and was being put in lobbies with all the other bad sports. And frankly, he's pretty pissy about it.

Why don't we do the same with league? This would keep them in the "lower priority queue" until they have improved their behavior.

Haven't put a lot of thought into it, but here's what i got.

Solution 1) Once someone is put into the category of a "Bad Sport" (I suggest we call them Shaco's Little Boxes, since they're all such trolls) they are left in there for about, let's say 5 games. At the end of the 5 game, someone from the Tribunal will review their behavior from the 5 games. They will be the one to determine if they should be let back into the normal queues. And if the offending player wants to play a sixth or seventh game before someone from the tribunal can review, well sucks to be then, you're still a Little Shaco Box.

Solution 2) No tribunal, we just punish players accordingly, dependent on a few factors.

Factor 1: The type of offense. If someone was being a racist in the chat, they are going to get banned a lot longer than autolocking AD Bard mid and "refusing to communicate with team"

Factor 2: the number of previous offenses, and their severity.

Factor 3: How recently any past offenses have happened.

This is more similar to what we have in place right now.

I personally feel that this is going to be the best system in place

And if that wasn't enough to please you, here's a picture of a cute cat and dog together:

You realize that solution 2 is actually the system that is in place right now and that there is no Tribunal any longer?

The question you asked in your second paragraph is answered in your first. Specifically, Riot won't use a "prisoner's island"-style system for Player Behavior issues because - as you indicated - it tends to simply aggravate the problem (or, as you put it, "And frankly, he's pretty pissy about it).

The discussion's been around for a while. Here's Lyte on the subject from back in 2012. Somewhat more recently, in 2014, a friend of mine wrote a little about it.

I thought there was a more recent post on Reddit about it, but I can't seem to find it. But generally, the problem with Prisoner's Island is that they can't keep them on the island - so you have a group of people playing together for a while, making each other more and more toxic, until they get pissed off enough about it to start making smurf accounts, and bringing that toxicity to the lowest levels (and thus the most vulnerable part of the playerbase).

This wouldn't work very well. It's too easy for them to fake not being toxic for a few games and get out of this. Then just go back to being toxic trolls again. The initial number of games needs to longer. If it happens enough times, then it "might" work; however, it could also encourage them to be toxic as they are receiving a reaction to their behavior.

The problem is that this creates a "prisoners' island" scenario and that's something Riot specifically wants to avoid.
