The death of every fun video game...
It's always the same.
- Great company makes a fun game.
- Player feedback goes into decision making, which helps the game get more and more popular since all of the changes are making the game more fun to most players.
- Game company gets bought by a larger corporation.
- Larger corporation now tells the game designers what to do (instead of the players) in order to make more money.
- Player feedback is ignored, and the game slowly dies out as more and more unwanted changes are implemented in order to sell more stuff.
For example: Dynamic Que Riot has studied RP purchases and knows that playing with friends makes players more likely to spend RP. They implement dynamic que to force players to play with teams in order to climb the ladder, which will make them more money. They ignore the large portion of their player base that wants solo que because they think it is more competitive and a more accurate reflection of individual skill. Eventually these players leave, the games competitiveness leaves with them, and the percentage of casual players increases. Nothing wrong with being a casual player obviously, but they are typically not dedicated/attached/frequent players, and are not able to keep the game alive.
