New Ryze (thoughts of a random)

So I just played a match of new ryze and I have some majorly mixed feeling on him. On one hand, I love his early game with his new e as it is amazing for poking the enemy down in the laning phase and deals a good amount of damage. However, I feel so hampered by my passive. Old ryze got bonus cd on his abilities from his q without the need of only every 5 spells for 5 seconds. Several times I would go into a fight late game, and I would just stand there for a bit because even with that small moment of strength, after its gone everything just doesn't seem to do enough. I don't know if I was just building wrong, but I felt seriously weak unless I could get almost the same amount of peel as an adc. Maybe someone else will figure out how to manage that passive better but right now I hate ryze because of it. Side note, hate the q in laning phase, I just couldn't seem to hit it if the enemy was anywhere near the minions, it just feels too wide, late game however or when running, It's great as firing it behind you as you run can really whittle people down.

Tl;dr Love new Ryze's early game, but feel like his passive is very restricting in the late game, anyone elses thoughts and maybe advice for using it better?

I feel like his passive is telling you to not build CDR but his ult gives free 30% CDR making the point moot. Its very strange

He has a much higher skill cap right now because of his passive. You can stack it by just firing off Qs, but you need good foresight into when you're going to fight, and/or how to get your passive to proc and still have cooldowns to use it depending on how many stacks you currently have (ie. you have 2 stacks right now, you need 3 more to proc your passive, so you hit your ult, Q, E at the start of a fight to proc your passive and shield off some damage, use your W to reset your Q and shorten E's cooldown, and cast QEQ to reset your W cooldown, and so on. If it's a little bit longer before you fight, you might need to throw another Q and have a plan for what combo you do at 3 stacks, 4 stacks, etc.). I think 2 stacks is the lowest he should be at when going into a fight, otherwise you won't have cooldowns to use during the fight to reset your other cooldowns (which, you need to know what order to use your spells to maximize the cooldown resets and still maximize damage in the windown you have).

Once your passive does proc, however, I think it's generally most efficient to Q inbetween each spell you cast, since your Q is generally your major damage source, barring situations like E'ing someone in the middle of a wave, and it also does the most to reset the cooldown of your other spells. Rule of thumb is that while your passive is procced, any spell will reset your Q cooldown, ~ two spells will reset your E cooldown, and ~ 3 spells will reset your W cooldown (if memory serves on his cooldowns); after that it's just an on-the-fly math problem on how many spells you need to stretch the combo out to, which spells you need to use given the situation, how to maximize your cooldown resets given your needs, etc.

Basically, he's much more difficult to master, I wouldn't expect to get the hang of him after just a few games.
