Dear RIOT: It seems WAY too hard to get S ratings on tank junglers

So this is going to seem a bit like sour grapes, and is certainly a touch anecdotal, but I've seen no shortage of enemy tank junglers that have fallen to the same plight. The metrics used to determine S ratings just doesn't seem to very accurately reflect the performance of a tank jungler. Unlike carry junglers, tank junglers don't tend to have very many kills, they don't tend to deal much of the team's total damage, and they don't farm jungle camps nearly as quickly. I totally understand why Riot wants to keep the methods by which they determine ratings under wraps, but it just seems to be so heavily skewed towards carry-type champions which doesn't help with the feeling that carries are the "stars" of the game and everyone else is their entourage.

I'll procede with my most recent Sejuani game because I feel that it's illustrative of the point I'm trying to make. In this 35 minute game, every single champion on my team except me obtained an S rating. Not only did I not obtain an S, I didn't even obtain an A+. But looking at the stats from that game:

  • KDA of 5/1/17
  • Kill participation of 55-60% behind only Sona
  • Least deaths in the game
  • Most wards placed by a huge margin (50% over the next closest, again, our sona)
  • Every objective secured, Rift Herald, all 4 elemental dragons, and Baron.
  • Despite only 1 death, soaked up a massive portion of the enemy team's damage for our team taking over 1/3 of the team's total POST mitigation dmaage received.
  • secured multiple buffs and camps in the enemy's jungle *Total damage dealt only just below that of our ADC
  • Most enemy wards destroyed on our team

So, I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it was a Challenger, Master or even Diamond performance, but, what I'm saying is that, by pretty much every metric your team should EXPECT a jungle tank to perform, I was doing it, and, again, I'm not saying I was leagues better than my team, but EVERY SINGLE other member of my team got an S (at least that's what it looked like in post game because I'm 90% sure no one on the enemy team did). Honestly what more is a tank jungle supposed to do? Should I have dropped my tank items and gone Abyssal + Liandries death Sejuani? stealing all of our team's kills and, every time we won a team fight, instead of helping to push or take an objective I should have retreated into my jungle to farm? Because I could have done those things, and they would have probably made my score look better as far as damage dealt, kills and CS, but the issue is, that doing that is not what a tank jungle is SUPPOSED to do, and if that's what's required to get an S, then you're really not helping your team by trying to score an S rating. I'm not saying "give me an S I deserve it" I'm saying that I don't think the system is fairly calibrated to make tanks or supports feel rewarded for playing the way a tank or support is supposed to play. I should look at a score of A and be like "so close, I'll get it next time." I shouldn't look at it and say... "what more could I possibly do?" I mean I suppose I could have died 0 times instead of once, but that seems more like the difference between an S+ and an S/S- than the requirement to get an S in the first place.

I digress; I don't want to start rambling. Final point is this: I know this isn't a gameplay issue, so it's probably not Riot's highest priority right now, but it feels really junky to feel like your role just isn't appreciated by Riot because it's being judged based off of metrics that aren't a good representation of performance on a champion. And, you know, maybe Riot has hidden metrics that I don't know about and there's a reason that my teammates got Ss without me, but looking at the stats, it's pretty hard to see that.
