Sexuality and League

So for one of my classes discussing media and the presentation of sexuality/LGBTQ community (Lesbian gay bisexual etc), I did a small portion on it in reference to LoL and about the results I got from a small community survey! Please be courteous even if you disagree, as this is personal findings and speculation on my own behalf!

But what about when sexuality isn’t presented? What about when it’s up to the game community to come up with their own interpretations? I went a little beyond the basic assignment and decided to do my own project when it comes to a game I play a lot of: League of Legends. For this project, I went around the community and asked two specific questions:

1.) Do you think there are LGBTQ representations in this game?

2.) If so, name one or two examples of this.

After a few questionings and community response, I found results I expected: While there is little-to-no direct sexuality referenced in the lore of characters outside of marriages or romantic partners, three characters almost always came up when people thought of LGBTQ representations: Taric, The Gem Knight, Ezreal, The Prodigal Explorer and Vi, The Piltover Enforcer. So why did these three come up more than any other response when only a paragraph or so of story exist for them and a handful of voice quotes?

When it comes to Taric, most of the perception seems to come from how he is presented. Taric is soft spoken, has well-groomed hair, uses “Gem magic” to fight (Something more referenced with females than males) and is normally played in a role with a primarily female cast. What’s even more interesting is that most people pair him in a homosexual relationship with Ezreal, as Ezreal is often seen in the community as a “twink” who serves as the other half to Taric. Even when the creators of this game insinuated that Ezreal was possibly in a relationship with Lux (Far more reference and hinting than ever given to the relationship with Taric), the community still preferred to pair him with Taric than a female.

Vi has to be one of the most interesting cases due to the majority of her lesbian image being associated with having a female partner (and fellow playable character) Caitlyn. Vi refers to her as “Cupcake” due to Caitlyn using cupcakes in her traps. Vi and Caitlyn are partners on a police force, a role usually portrayed by two men. Vi is loud, bombastic and primarily fights as a boxer or brawler. All these attributes push Vi to seem more like a stereotypical “lesbian” who is in a homosexual relationship with her partner. Yet no proof of this exists. So why do people consider Vi a lesbian when she could simply be teasing her partner? Why is Vi considered a lesbian as opposed to polyamorous, bisexual or even just uninterested in sex?

This experiment, to me, served as a microcosm of how people still deal with LGBTQ in the media. It’s easier to assign black-and-white, gay-or-straight sexualities to characters as opposed to dig deeper and question just how much these rules apply. It’s easier and more comfortable to put these characters in very stereotypical lights because it helps the players identify with them. We use these stereotypes because they’re familiar to us and easier to relate to than thinking that maybe sexuality isn’t as black and white as we all assume it to be. Perhaps I’m overthinking a simple community speculation or perhaps I’m just the one out of ten that think there’s more to these ideas than simple, one-note sexuality jokes.

Just wanted to share this to see if anyone might want to provide their own thoughts or opinions. Please remember to be courteous and kind about others' thoughts and views on the subject.

I don't think I'd consider the slash fiction as canon.

Ever.

And you totally forgot the Leona-Diana yuri pairing.

  1. Just because a non-canon male skin is pink with fur leg warmers doesn't mean that champ is gay. That is a stereotype.

  2. Just because a male isn't bulging with fat or muscles means he's gay either. Ez totally has a crush on Lux too.

  3. Females with a female PROFESSIONAL partner aren't necessarily gay either.

Overall, this is all fans putting their personal wants on these champs. Hence me calling it slash fiction.

There's very little romantically even hinted about in the game or its lore because frankly there's not a lot of room within the game proper for sexuality.

Ez likes Lux (don't know her feelings). Kass has a daughter. Lucian used to be married to a woman. Ashe might end up married to Trynd if they aren't officially. Cass seduced some guys for her family. Ahri... used her charms for non-sexual purposes as she was preying on people but it doesn't say how far she went or if she even cared about those sorts of things (just hunting for food and targeting the low hanging fruit). That's about it. 7 out of over a hundred we can say anything possibly about.

Frankly I'd prefer it if sexuality were kept to a minimal level as it is. It doesn't do anything for any of the characters, how they play, or how they are balanced.

This actually a very interesting topic you've raised.

For the most part, I'd say Riot has never or has very overtly mentioned sexuality in League of Legends. Everything we know about relationships within the League are tied to the Community and our fantasies. Anything sexual that we think we know can most likely be stemmed back to the Community itself.

Often times, we take what we hear and mold into something we want to hear. Riot told us Lucian and Senna (deceased?) were married at one time. What they did not say is if they had a child or anything similar to that. The Community had a field day about that. We know Syndra and Zed are evil, twisted Ionians. What we want to know is Zed and Syndra's relationship. We know Garen and Katarina have a rival friend/enemy complex. What the Community wanted was Garen and Katarina having more than that. Tryndamere and Ashe are married; we know this to be true. What we make up is the sexuality end of it.

Addressing Ezreal and Taric... oh boy. These two. At one time, Ezreal and Taric was 'the bot lane'. With their in game dominance came their "story". Players saw the power they had in game and were, for like of better words, inspired by it. The took the forums and fan fiction sites to tell the story of the unstoppable gay duo. Riot told us Ezreal liked Lux, but Taric seemed like a such a better match in and out of the game. We preferred what we believed to be true, rather than the real facts presented to us.

Vi is an odd case. There's quite a bit of psychological rhetoric we could use. "She was an orphan and grew up in the slums, maybe that's why she acts that way". I am not going to diagnosis a video game character because that would be a silly waste of time, but we can draw conclusions from her. A former outlaw who joined the PPD (Piltover Police Department) to fight crime, rather than advance it. Maybe Vi's just good at her job and does not let sexuality get in the way of her job. Have you seen her in game? She is a professional at what she does after all. Vi is brooding and almost manly, but we cannot judge her based on these things. Point is, Riot has told use zero about Vi's preferences and I doubt Riot will ever say otherwise.

League of Legends is a game that prides itself on breaking the rules, stepping out of the box, and constantly evolving. A key part of that mission is the Community making these ludicrous stories to go along with the game. An active, engaged Community is what makes League the masterpiece its grown into today. Even though these stories may seem crazy, its what keeps us all attached and remember League throughout our daily lives. I hand it to Riot for listening to its Community and I throw my hat off to each Community member for constantly posting comments, suggestions, and stories. What we have here is something not many games and players have. Our Community is so intertwined to League and Riot, its almost like we're a second family. We are a creative bunch and there's no telling what story we'll see next. Because while Riot may not have the time, resources, or stomach to make these stories up, you can sure bet the good folks in the Community do.

Again, thank you for bringing this topic up. It is a really interesting post that I look forward to discussing again.

TBH I think Vi is a pansexual. It may be because she's my favorite champion but honestly, her personality is a lot like mine (Again this could just be me fan-girling). But honestly, I'd hate to lump all pansexuals together as have a certain personality but from personal experience most of us do tend to lean toward a certain type of attitude and Vi has it.

Aside from Vi. I feel that Ashe is a lesbian. Although she's "married" it's not really out of love, more so duty. Honestly, I just feel Ashe would be happy with a woman so long as she was peaceful yet strong like her.
