Not X refunds per season. But X refund(s) for every X RP purchased.
People say Riot will not implemented it because it loses future profits. Meaning if there's a skin I like, I buy RP and the skin. But a skin I like more is released, I buy RP and the skin, but if I had the refund, I would've refunded the first skin and bought the 2nd one, without buying RP again. Essentially, Riot just made double off me because they did not implement a refund system.
While I can see this side of the argument, it is only looking at numbers. Not to mention, the argument above would actually go against the current system of 3 refunds, which actually was the system for a time in the beginning, meaning that there's more to it than simply just numbers. (I've only started playing since
's release, so I don't know what exactly was going on before).
The above argument does not address how people make decisions and how much they weigh them.
First off, the above scenario has the player buying RP twice, for a skin they like and a skin they like more, released one after the other. In reality though, it's unlikely for a person with rationality to put himself under that scenario if they weigh the circumstances they are under. Meaning, they'll likely hold off buying that first skin in the first place.
I'll use myself as an example: I'm an
fan and she is one of my many top mains, I've started learning her quite a while before a skin I know I wanted for her showed up. Originally, I was mildly tempted at settling with Frostbutt ahem Frostblade
, with my favourite colour being blue and I personally prefer short hair over long hair. However, I'm only neutral in terms of the "ice" theme, which is what the skin is based on, so I held on to my money.
And I know that I will regret the purchase if Riot released a traditional Asian themed skin for her (which is my favourite theme among skins in LOL. Warring Kingdoms, Dragonblade, etc.) I hope Riot does (not) make note of this...
My wait was eventually answered in the form of Order of the Lotus
. Which is the only
skin that I have and always had.
Also, me and most of my real life friends who play this game have a "1 skin per champ" rule. And I'm sure many people here do too.
If people know that they can't afford to regret a purchase a 4th time, they'll less likely to ultimately decide to buy a skin they "sorta want". In fact, this is my relationship with Project
as of right now.
So basically having less refunds does not make Riot more money by way of players spending for more RP. In fact, it gives incentive for players to rethink their decisions before they make them and it makes them less likely to make the purchase in the first place. By giving players a free refund for every X RP purchased, it gives players incentive to buy RP and the all the skins they want rather than only the skins they want most, knowing they can afford to regret a purchase here and there. Making it a net profit for Riot's side.
Oh yeah, if you have similar stories like the
one I had, or any RP/skin stories you feel like sharing, please do.
