So, what does it mean to have a "main"

I am asking because a few of my friends keep telling me I need to "settle down" and "Main" a few select champs. Paraphrasing from what they said, I'd apparently rapidly improve if I did this instead of what I currently do which is play pretty much..well. Everything. Honestly, I'm considering it because I would love to get better and be able to get up to diamond next season (I could climb higher as it is but with just such a short time left and me having recently hit 30 on the account, it seems like a waste of time since I placed in gold.) so that is why I am here to ask a few questions.

Most namely what defines a main? Does that mean I play ONLY these champs or perhaps only this one champ? How many champs should I "main"? Multiples for one role, one for each role?

I'm just not entirely sure what I should do. Hence all the questions. As for who I plan to main, I have a few ideas, most notably currently is Draven. Easily my favorite ADC, someone I could play a ton and someone I'm getting rather proficient with. Any and all advice will be welcomed. Thanks guys :) Sorry if the questions seem weird or stupid, I'm just not entirely sure how to approach the situation since, like I said. I'm a jack of all trades, master of none guy up until this point.

To clarify: I could easily get to my current rank with any single champion in the game, my proficiency with them is about even across the board. Hence why I think my friends are telling me I should focus on something. Can't say I disagree entirely. But I'll make my mind up after this thread, assuming I get some informative answers.

Thanks again :D

Playing a character repeatedly until you feel like you have mastered their kit is pretty much what having a main is, although some people do take it to the extreme and play only one champ and only one lane (wouldn't recommend that unless you are in a strict ranked team already). For solo queue I would say you should at least get comfortable with two or three champions for each lane, that way if your champion is selected by the other team, or banned you have back ups to refer to.

There are a lot of similar champions... I think just a strong sense of comfort with them no matter whom you are facing.

Pretty much the character you would play into any match up regardless of counter picks, this would be your strongest champion in a particular role, my main champions for example are Quinn, Ahri and Sona, if the enemy team picks malphite, annie or blitzcrank, I'm not likely to change my picks as I'm familiar with the match ups to the point where I have a better chance at winning through the counter pick than if I picked something that is considered stronger vs the enemy champion that I have less experience with.
