How would you weight Summoners of various ranks (Gold, Silver, etc.) in mixed-Tier matches?

r/lol just insta-downvoted this without any input. (Apparently, those most illustrious Summoners deem this less worthy of discussion than what xPeke just tweeted about loving pizza.) Let's see if Community Beta can do better.

Here are three models for weighting Summoners of various ranks in a mixed-Tier game. /r/leagueoflegends, what are your thoughts on which model is the best? Or is there a significantly different model that you'd propose?

Proposed criterion for evaluating these models: which one generates the fairest teams, if each team is constrained by total number of points?

Linear Model

  • Bronze: 1 point
  • Silver: 2 points
  • Gold: 3 points
  • Platinum: 4 points
  • Diamond: 5 points

Example 20-point teams:

  • 5 Platinum players
  • 3 Diamonds, a Gold, and a Silver
  • 3 Diamonds, a Plat, and a Bronze

Doubling Model

  • Bronze: 1 point
  • Silver: 2 points
  • Gold: 4 points
  • Platinum: 8 points
  • Diamond: 16 points

Example 20-point teams:

  • 5 Golds
  • 1 Diamond and 4 Bronzes
  • 1 Plat, 2 Golds, and 2 Silvers

Compromise Model

  • Bronze: 1 point
  • Silver: 3 points
  • Gold: 5 points
  • Platinum: 8 points
  • Diamond: 12 points

Example 20-point teams:

  • 1 Diamond, 1 Gold, and 3 Bronzes
  • 1 Plat, 2 Golds, and 2 Bronzes
  • 3 Golds, 1 Silver, and 1 Bronze (19 points)

I got to asking this question while working on Factions. For tournaments, we can pretty much ensure that the two teams will mirror each other in Tier composition, e.g., 3 Diamonds and 2 Golds vs. 3 Diamonds and 2 Golds. However, for pickup matches, we have to use a formula to approximately weight the value of a lopsided match, which necessarily requires some kind of quantitative judgment about the team-winning power of various tiers relative to one another. For example, if a team of 3 Golds and 2 Silvers beats a team of 2 Plats and 3 Silvers, should that be considered an upset victory (worth more points) or a predictable stomp (worth fewer points)? Or if an all-Silver team beats an all-Gold team, is that a really big deal or is that only mildly surprising?

I voted compromise, as it allows for the most various while still weighting higher ELOs considerably.

That said, it's pretty easy (and detrimental to balance) for a Diamond player to have/log in to a Bronze level account. While I'm not sure how you'd get around this, League ranking isn't always an absolute indicator of skill, especially when people are playing anonymously from outside locations.

I vote compromise, having everyone of the same skill levels may lead to lots of fighting and losing, its not about skill its about compatibility over that, a team with 4 carries that fight may lose vs a 5 man team of people working together may win using teamwork. I say having 2 or 3 high ELOS and 2 or 3 low ELOS will be a good compensation and they will work together well, with that I like the 19 point compromise team.
