What's most likely to kill League and how to fix it
Phylol did a video recently on what is League of Legends' biggest threat right now. I'm gonna focus on the big one that he talked about, the smurfs. So, basically, higher tier players are playing on lower tier smurfs to avoid the auto-fill and long queue times at higher ranks. This is eventually going to filter down to where everyone is playing at a lower rank than they really are, and then people trying to climb the ranks for the first time are basically doomed to learn fast or get so tilted that they quit the game. I don't have a solution for the long queue times problem, but I do have a solution for the auto fill. Make it opt-in. Simply put, don't make it pop up for everyone that a game has been found. Put up an AFK check-like screen for just the players who are getting auto filled saying that a game has been found with X role available and give them the option to stay in queue looking for their main roles or to join that game, at which point the AFK check pops up for everyone in that lobby. Nobody who wasn't auto-filled would know that the auto fill even happened in the first place and nobody would know at all who did the auto fill. As for the queue times, he talked about how, at higher ranks, people can be sitting in queue for 20-30 minutes even with the auto fill. If it takes 20-30 minutes for enough people who are in that range to even enter queue for a game to start, then I don't think there's really anything that can be done. If you increase the range, then now you have people who are plat/diamond/master/challenger playing with bronze/silver/gold plebs, myself included, and I don't want that. I know I'm not good enough to play with those higher tier players. One of the best ways to learn is to play against people who are better than you so that you're forced to learn fast or die, but most people just end up getting tilted and wanting to quit. If the problems of smurfs that are a rank lower than the main accounts isn't fixed, eventually diamond players will really be master, plat will really be diamond, and so on until the game as a whole is unplayable for the bronze players trying to climb the ladder for the first time. At which point, all the bad bronze players and any and all new players who don't learn fast enough will quit the game and League's only real playerbase will be the currently existing one. Of course, the easiest way to fix all of these problems would be to simply bring back solo queue. For ranked, just like it was before, you can only queue solo or with a single friend or as a 5-man. Keep new champ select in and it's going to be much better than the current system, and I have no idea why Riot is refusing to do this. Even keep normal draft games, not ranked, as Dynamic Queue so people can play with their friends in normals. What this all really boils down to is what they should be. Ranked should be for testing individual skill, skill in coordination with one other player, or the skill of a full team, not this dynamic queue stuff where some people get boosted by queueing up with their friends and others actually try to climb solo and improve. Normals should be about practicing for ranked, playing with friends, and having fun.
